August 19, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Tony Patane tied the game with an RBI single and Cameron Monger plated two with his game-winning hit as the Tornadoes scored four in the ninth and defeated Brockton 6-3 on Friday at Campanelli Stadium. Worcester knocked four hits off of Jimmer Kennedy, who blew a save and was credited with the loss.
The victory put the Tornadoes back in a tie for first in the second half with Brockton.
Nick Serino earned the win thanks to 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. He stranded the only two baserunners he inherited and allowed two hits.
The Rox scored a run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead on Shawn Williams' single and added another in the second. Tucker Nathans' sacrifice fly made it 2-0 through two in the City of Champions.
The Tornadoes tied the game in the fourth on Alex Trezza's two-run double, scoring both Abraham Nunez and Chris Colabello.
In the fifth frame, the Rox retook the lead with an RBI triple by Mike Torres. Kevin Cooper's outing ended when the inning did with a four-strikeout, two-walk effort, allowing three runs and six hits.
Serino entered the game in the sixth, after Matt McDonald retired two batters, then gave up consecutive singles. The inning ended with Dan Barbero caught trying to steal home after Dominic Ramos took off for second.
Dustin Birosak lasted until the eighth inning, retiring both batters he faced in the frame. He had four strikeouts, gave up five hits and two runs, and retired the Tornadoes in order four times. He didn't allow a baserunner until Monger's single with two outs in the third.
Kennedy struck the only batter he faced in the eighth out, ringing Colabello up on a low-and-away fastball. In the top of the final inning, Trezza singled. Nick Salotti followed with a base hit, and each runner took an extra base on Keith Brachold's error. Shawn Gilblair--who scored the winning run-- pinch-ran for Salotti.
Jacob Fabry struck out (and was the only batter Kennedy would retire in the ninth). Ryan Crespi walked to load the bases for Patane, whose single knocked the glove off of the Rox's righty reliever and sent Trezza home. Monger's single plated Gilblair and Crespi. Alex Nunez capped the scoring with a single, pushing Patane across to make it 6-3.
Abraham Nunez ended the inning with a 1-2-5-2-4-6 double play, with neither of the outs being a force. He hit one back to lefty reliever Mark Rosen, who glanced at second and threw home, trying to nab Monger. Williams, the catcher, threw to third. Torres, the third baseman, threw back home to retire the ex-Rox outfielder for the first out of the twin-killing. Williams threw to the second baseman Nathans, who relayed it over to the shortstop Ramos covering third to retire Alex Nunez and the side.
Albert Ayala picked up his second save of the season by striking out two Brockton batters. He allowed a single to Ramos, but got Chris Valencia (who was 0-for-5) to fly out and end the game.
Game two of the series is Saturday at 7:05pm as the Tornadoes send lefty ace Zach Zuercher to the mound. Tornadoes Pre-Game Live begins at 6:50 on USTREAM. Bill "Spaceman" Lee-- who defeated the Tornadoes on behalf of the Rox last year-- will throw out the first pitch.
