Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS. --- Less than three months away from the start of the regular season, the Mississippi RiverKings are not only filling their roster but also adding to their schedule.
The Huntsville Havoc have agreed to a home-and-home series with Mississippi during the first week of training camp in preparation for the 2011-12 regular season. Players are due to report for team physicals by October 9 with the first day of training camp scheduled for October 10.
The RiverKings will visit the Havoc on October 13 for a 6:30 p.m. tilt at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Alabama before returning to the Desoto Civic Center on October 14 for a 7:05 p.m. matchup in Southaven.
"It is great to have a rival team so close, especially for an exhibition series during training camp," says General Manager Ab Mattice of the Mississippi RiverKings. "We might as well get this rivalry heated up early! We are going to see Huntsville a lot so it is going to be interesting. I am excited to get the action started and look forward to a great season."
Keith Jeffries, General Manager for Huntsville, echos these sentiments. "The Havoc are proud to host the RiverKings in their inaugural SPHL game and excited to be the first league team to play in front of the fans in the Desoto Civic Center," says Jeffries. "Although these are exhibition games, we expect that both teams will want to establish dominance in what is destined to become a heated rivalry."
These two teams will in fact be seeing quite a bit of each other throughout the upcoming year with 10 games scheduled combining the two squads. The RiverKings will suit up for the same number of contests versus the Knoxville Ice Bears and the Louisiana IceGators.
The first regular season game to feature the Kings and Havoc will take place at home on Tuesday, November 15 at 10:05 a.m. for the annual 'Face Off Field Trip' game. Huntsville will host Mississippi for the first time on Saturday, January 7 for a 7:30 p.m. start. The two teams will also clash during the Valentine's Day Game in Southaven on Tuesday, February 14 at 7:05 p.m.
Don't forget that Opening Night for hockey in the Mid-South is scheduled for Saturday, October 22 at 7:05 p.m. at the Desoto Civic Center. The Mississippi RiverKings will celebrate their 20th Anniversary Season by hosting the Pensacola Ice Flyers in their first ever SPHL regular season game in franchise history.
