Parsons Makes Minor League History

ROCHESTER, MI--- Bloomington's Don Parsons received the best gift this holiday season, a minor league goal scoring record. After scoring just two goals in his last 11 games, Parsons exploded for two goals Saturday night to tie, then break, the all-time goal scoring record for minor league hockey. Parsons, who has recorded the goal on the 982nd professional game of his 17th pro career, accomplished the feat in 117 games fewer than Kevin Kerr, who set the record back in during the 2004-05 season in 1,099 total games played. Bloomington ended the night giving up five unanswered goals in the third period Saturday to lose to Flint 7-4.

Facing Flint for the second of back-to-back games Sunday evening, the PrairieThunder captured a 4-2 victory over the visiting Generals. Parsons recorded two more goals in the game, giving him a current total of 680 career goals. The win gave Bloomington four out of six possible points this weekend and Parsons propelled to 1,305 career points.

There was no shortage of physical presence on the ice after the holiday break in the IHL. There were a total of 22 players over the eight games played this past weekend that received fighting majors, with a total of 36 majors handed out for 180 total minutes. Leading the way this weekend was Fort Wayne's Brad MacMillian. MacMillian had a total of four fights for 20 minutes while teammate Jay Holladay, Bloomington's Adam Tomkow and Muskegon's Marty Doyle each had three fights a piece this weekend.

Bloomington PrairieThunder - (2-1-0-0) - Brett Holmberg had a franchise record string of 102 consecutive games played snapped when he missed Sunday's game against Flint because of a concussion. He played in all 76 last season and was in the first 26 games this year. Marty Standish has scored nine points in his last eight games and 13 in 15 games since joining the team November 21st. Jon Booras has scored at least one point in 19 of the 25 games he has played. He has scored at least one point in seven straight games after going a season-high three games without scoring a point. Rookie Nick Goyens first professional assist was a memorable one as it was his pass that led to Don Parsons' record-setting career goal No. 678. The PrairieThunder is 5-0 when holding opponents to two or fewer goals in a game.

Flint Generals - (1-2-0-0) - Forward Steve Rymsha has moved into second place overall in the IHL in scoring with 41 points in 31 games played. He also is tied for the lead league in goals scored with Bloomington's Don Parsons (19). John DiPace continues rack up the penalty minutes, leading the IHL with 124 minutes in 29 games played. Not only do they have the league's leading PIM man, Flint also leads the entire IHL in penalty minutes with 774 on the season. Defenseman Kyle Deck leads all rookies in scoring with 26 points (10g, 16a). Six of his 10 goals have come via the Generals power play. Deck's 26 points puts him just one behind Fort Wayne's Guy Dupuis in scoring among IHL defenseman. After playing spoiler to Don Parsons record breaking game with a 7-4 come-from-behind win Saturday, Flint has improved to 4-3-0-0 against the PrairieThunder, which is the only team the Generals have a winning record against.

Fort Wayne Komets - (1-1-0-1) - The Komets earned three points in three games for week 11 of 2008-09 to maintain third place in the IHL with 32 points. Friday night the Komets dropped a 3-2 decision to the visiting Bloomington PrairieThunder in their first shootout of the season. It was the first home shootout loss for Fort Wayne since March 23, 2007 (7-6 vs Quad City). Saturday the Komets were doubled-up at Port Huron 4-2 to push their winless streak to three games. It was the Komet's first loss of the season at Port Huron in four visits. Left wing P.C. Drouin's IHL season high point-streak ended at 12 games (5g, 13a). Sunday Fort Wayne snapped its three-game winless streak with a 5-1 victory at Muskegon. Center Colin Chaulk passed four assists, three on the power play to lead the IHL with 19 power play assists. The Komets maintained their IHL lead on the power play scoring five power play goals on 21 chances to finish the week with an IHL best 22.7% power play rating. The Komets also surrendered only two power play goals on 20 penalty kills to continue to lead the league with an 87.2% penalty kill rating. Komet defenseman Guy Dupuis registered a goal and four assists in the three games played and continues to lead IHL defensemen with 22 assists and 27 points.

Kalamazoo Wings - (1-1-0-0) - K-Wings have the top winning percentage in the IHL. Anthony Battaglia is three games shy of 400 in his career. Mark Nebus is on a three-game point streak and has earned points in six of his last seven games. Kalamazoo's five-game winning streak was snapped last Saturday in Muskegon. Kalamazoo is still on a seven-game home winning streak. John Glavota set a personal high for points in a game with three last Friday in Flint. Rod Aldoff is three goals shy of 100 in his career. Kalamazoo will finish off their four-game road swing Monday night in Fort Wayne. K-Wings received offensive contributions from 11 of their 16 skaters in their 8-3 victory over Flint. Wednesday Night is the K-Wings 7th Annual New Year's Eve Bash. The K-Wings are 2-2-0-2 in the game and 0-1-0-2 against Muskegon.

Muskegon Lumberjacks - (1-1-1-0) - The Lumberjacks attracted their largest crowd of the season Sunday, December 28th in their rescheduled game against Fort Wayne of 4,476. For the after Christmas weekend, the Lumberjacks attracted a total of 7,659 fans for their two games in as many days at Walker Arena. With their 3-2 Saturday night victory over archrival Kalamazoo, Muskegon clamed its 6th consecutive home conquest over the K-Wings dating back to last season, outscoring Kalamazoo 21-8 in that span. Muskegon head coach Bruce Ramsay (98) is just two victories from reaching the century plateau as the third coach with the most wins in the modern era of Muskegon pro hockey. Defenseman Alex Lamontagne scored his first ever pro goal as the game's key clutch first goal in his team's 3-2 triumph over Kalamazoo Saturday night. The Lumberjacks remain unblemished thus far this season when entering the third period (9-0-0-0).

Port Huron Icehawks - (2-0-0-0) - The Icehawks won both of their games played last week. With Saturday's win over Fort Wayne and a Kalamazoo loss at Muskegon, the Icehawks took over sole possession of first place in the IHL standings with 36 points. Kalamazoo plays tonight at Fort Wayne, however, and could move back into a first place tie with Port Huron with a win. With three goals in two games last week, Jeff Zehr is now riding a four game goal streak (5g) and a seven game point streak (6g, 4a). Jamie Carroll also put up assists in both games played last week to extend his assist streak to five games. Tab Lardner saw his point streak snapped at nine games on Saturday. Jason Selleke is closing in on several personal milestones. He is three points shy of 300 in his pro career and four games away from playing in his 500th professional contest. Selleke has averaged a point per game since returning to the lineup on December 16th after missing several weeks due to injury. He has seven points (2g, 5a) in his last six games.
