Medford Rogues News Release
BEND, OR - The Medford Rogues ran up an early 7-0 lead then survived a late charge from the Bend Elks in taking the first game of a three-game series by a score of 7-5. A 14-hit attack, led by a 4-5 night by 2B Parker Miles, and a strong start by RHP Chad Hockin, carried the night for Medford.
The Rogues batted around in the first inning as SS Joe Chavez led off with a single and moved to third on a fielder's choice and stolen base, scoring on a single from 1B Kevin Davidson. DH Matt Taylor and OF A.J. Balta followed with singles to load the bases. Miles then knocked two in with a single to take it to 3-0, followed by a bouncer up the middle from C Niko Pacheco to plate Balta and extend the lead to four as the Rogues had six hits in the first inning.
In the third, the Rogues added three more hits and a run with Miles driving in Davidson on a one-out single, moving the score to 5-0. Davidson drove in Chavez in the fourth with a sacrifice fly to give the Rogues a 6-0 lead. Another run scored for the Rogues in the fifth before Bend answered with two in the bottom of the fifth to make it 7-2 through five.
Hockin (1-1), in his first start of the season, went six innings giving up two runs on two hits, four walks and three strikeouts. Relievers RHP Dillon Keene, LHP Brandon Snyder, RHP Hector Lujan and RHP Jeff Hardy finished off the game, allowing three runs in a rough eighth inning. Hardy picked up his first save of the year in retiring the side in the ninth. Clay Gartner took the loss for Bend, his first of the year after starting 4-0.
Three Rogues - Davidson, Balta and Miles - had at least three hits, with Miles leading the way with a 4-5, three RBI night. All 14 Rogues hits were singles, and Miles raised his average from .200 to .255 with his performance. Medford moves to 12-16, Bend to 19-12, and the Rogues stay within four games of a playoff spot in the WCL South. The teams meet again Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. at Vince Genna Stadium in Bend. LHP Justin Jacome (1-0) is scheduled to start for the Rogues while RHP Taylor Elman (3-0) goes for Bend.
