WCL Bend Elks

Bend Loses to Medford 7-5

July 11, 2013 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release

The Bend Elks had the tying run at 1st base in the bottom of the 9th inning, but Tyler Servais bounced out to Kevin Davidson at 1st base to end the game as Bend fell to Medford in the opener of the 3 game series by a score of 7-5. Medford rode their bats to the victory as they had 14 hits in the game, all of them singles, to take 3 of 4 games played against the Elks to this point in 2013.

Medford looked like they were going to run away from the Bend Elks as they scored 4 runs in the top of the first inning off of Clay Gartner (4-1), sending all 9 hitters to the plate, and taking an early 4 run lead. Medford added a run in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to take a 7-0 lead halfway through the game.

In the bottom of the 5th inning, the Elks began to climb in to the game as Rogues starter Chad Hockin (1-1) began to struggle with control, as 2 walks, a Medford error, and a sacrifice fly from Chase Fields cut Medford's lead to 7-2 after 5 innings.

That is where the score would stay until the bottom of the 8th inning as Bend, who had only 5 hits in the game, were benefactors of 2 walks and 2 hit batters in the 8th inning, scoring 3 runs as they trailed Medford 7-5 through 8 innings.

After Medford was held scoreless in the top of the 9th inning, Justin Erlandson singled and Seth Spivey walked to put two men on to lead off the 9th inning. After Derek Dixon bounced into a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners with 1 out, Turner Gill struck out and Tyler Servais bounced out to Rogue first baseman Kevin Davidson to end the game.

The Bend Elks and Medford Rogues will play game 2 of the 3 game series on Thursday, first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
