Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
JUPITER, FL - Mike Parisi tossed seven shutout innings and Brian Martin went 3-for-4 with two RBI in his return from the disabled list as the Cardinals shut down the Dunedin Blue Jays 5-0 on Wednesday night at Roger Dean Stadium.
Parisi (1-2) gave up his share of base runners, but was able to record the big outs when needed. The Cardinals defense turned three double plays on the night, and the Blue Jays hitters finished 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Parisi also walked two and struck out four on his way to his first victory of the season with Palm Beach.
Blue Jays' starter David Purcey matched up with Parisi on a shutout through four innings, but allowed four runs in the fifth to the Cardinals' offense.
Matt Pagnozzi and Simon Williams led off the inning with singles. Jarrett Hoffpauir dropped a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance the runners, and they both came around to score on consecutive singles by Brendan Ryan and Martin. An out later, Ryan and Martin scored a double by Ty Parker to make it 4-0.
The Cardinals scored once more in the seventh on doubles by Hoffpauir and Martin.
Martin had been on the disabled list since mid-April with a broken left wrist.
Rich Scalamandre worked two scoreless innings to complete the combined shutout for the Cardinals.
With the victory the Cardinals moved to a season-best three games over .500 with a record of 9-6. The Cardinals play three more against the Blue Jays, with Thursday's game having an early start time of 11:05 a.m.
