
Panthers Assign Dryden Hunt to Portland

Portland, ME - Florida Panthers General Manager Dale Tallon announced today Dryden Hunt has been assigned to the Portland Pirates. In addition, Portland Pirates General Manager Eric Joyce announced defenseman Mike Downing and forward Eric Scheid have been released from their amateur tryout contracts.
Hunt, a 6-foot, 201 pound native of Nelson, British Columbia finished second in scoring in the Western Hockey League with 58 goals and 116 points in 72 games this season with the Moose Jaw Warriors. The 20 year-old scored seven goals and added nine assists for 16 points in 10 WHL playoff games before his team was eliminated in the second round this past week.
Hunt recorded five hat tricks in the month of February and finished with six on the season. He was named WHL player of the month for January and player of the week for the week ending Feb. 14.
The forward signed an entry-level contract with the Florida Panthers in March, 2016. He will join the Pirates in time to be eligible in the opening game of Atlantic Division Semifinals of the 2016 Calder Cup Playoffs Friday, April 22 at 7:00 p.m.
Downing, a 6-foot-2, 200 pound defenseman from Canton, Michigan, played in one game with Portland without registering a point. It was the first AHL stint for the 20 year-old, who will return to the University of Michigan to complete his degree.
Downing played 35 games during his junior season with the University of Michigan Wolverines this year, helping guide the Maize and Blue to a Big-10 conference title and NCAA Division I tournament berth. He scored 3 goals and 17 assists for 20 points and collected 66 penalty minutes.
Scheid, a 5-foot-10, 174 pound forward from Blaine, Minnesota played in three games with the Pirates and did not register a point. He will head back to complete his degree at Penn State University, where he appeared in all 34 games scoring 13 goals and 15 assists for the Nittany Lions. He finished second in team scoring with 28 points. In 131 collegiate games, including spending the 2011-2012 season at the University of Alaska-Anchorage, the 23 year-old scored 44 goals and 48 assists.
