Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
JUPITER, Fla. - The Palm Beach Cardinals (32 - 35) defeated the Dunedin Blue Jays, 4 - 1, in the series finale at Roger Dean Stadium. The Cardinals starting pitcher, Trey Nielsen, earned his seventh win of the season. With those wins, he leads the Cardinals rotation and is tied for second in the Florida State League.
After two scoreless innings, the Beach Birds broke the tie with two runs off one hit. Luke Voit highlighted the inning hitting his third home run over the left field wall. Prior to Voit's blast, Dunedin's starting pitcher, Jairo Labourt, issued a walk to Robelys Reyes to start the inning. He swiped second base, his 17th of the year, and moved to third on C.J. McElroy's fly ball to left field.
Brett Wiley mirrored McElroy, flying out to left to score Reyes.
The Blue Jays scored their only run of the game in the top of the fourth after Derrick Loveless started the inning with a standup double. He scored two batters later on Ian Parmley's fly ball to center field.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Cardinals added two more insurance runs to cushion the lead for the win. Just like the other inning when the Beach Birds scored, the leadoff man, Wiley, was issued a walk. With two outs and Wiley on second, Jake Gronsky started the rally for Palm Beach. He found the gap in deep right center field to plate Wiley. Gronsky later scored on Derek Gibson's third RBI as a Beach Bird.
After six complete innings, Trey Nielsen's day was complete, allowing just one run on six hits and striking out four. In his 12 starts, this was Nielsen's seventh quality start.
Three other Palm Beach pitchers were used to finish out the game, all pitching one inning each. Between the three, one hit was allowed, but the base runner was retired on a double play to end the inning. Chris Perry entered the game in the top of the ninth to finalize Palm Beach's win. After hitting the first batter he faced, he struck out two and induced a fly ball to right field, leaving the runner stranded on first base.
Two Beach Birds will play this Saturday in St. Lucie at the 2015 Florida State League All-Star game at Tradition Field. Infielder, Voit, will serve as the designated hitter for the South and participate in the Home Run Derby prior to the game. Pitcher, Alex Reyes, was also named to the roster.
The Cardinals will close out the first half of the season on Monday, June 22, with a three game series in Fort Myers against the Miracle. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. Palm Beach will return to Roger Dean Stadium on June 25 to play a two game series against the Jupiter Hammerheads. The Cardinals will act as the away team in both games. To purchase tickets, please call (561) 630-1828 or visit RogerDeanStadium.com.
