Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
JUPITER, FL- In a game that had everything pointing to a Lakeland Tigers sweep, quickly turned into a walk-a-thon, allowing the Palm Beach Cardinals to come away with a 4-3 victory, and divert themselves from falling under .500 for the first time this season.
The Lakeland (25-19) bullpen completely imploded in the ninth, with closer Kevin Whelan (1-1) walking four batters in a 1/3 of an inning, before Jeremy Johnson walked in the game-winner. The Cardinals overcame a 3-1 deficit, by walking five times in the inning, reaching on an error and not collecting a single hit.
Palm Beach starter Nick Webber kept the Cardinals in the game, after allowing three unearned runs in the first. Webber lasted six innings, allowing seven hits and striking out two.
Relievers Troy Cate and Jose Garcia (2-1) worked three scoreless innings allowing the Cardinals to set-up for the ninth inning walk around the bases.
Lakeland starter Jair Jurrjens dazzled the Palm Beach line-up, collecting ten strikeouts in seven innings of work. Jurrjens only run allowed came in the second inning, when Joe Mather doubled in Mike Ferris. Mather laid down a crucial sacrifice bunt in the ninth inning as well.
Palm Beach (22-21) travels to play a four-game series against Sarasota tomorrow, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:00 pm.
