Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

FORT MYERS, FL (May 22, 2006) - Three times prior to Monday night the Fort Myers Miracle had a chance to win a four game series taking a 2-1 series lead into the final game. In those three games they were outscored 39-9 and wound up with a split. They made sure history didn't repeat itself at Hammond Stadium as they came from behind to defeat the St. Lucie Mets 6-5.

The story was the Miracle bullpen who needed to help out a shaky Kyle Aselton who gave up five runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings. The bullpen, however, helped their teammate out. Ryan Callahan, Josh Hill and J.P. Martinez combined to throw 6.1 shutout innings allowing just three hits while walking two and striking out six. Callahan earned the victory by going 3.1 innings and keeping the game close.

With the Miracle trailing 5-3 in the sixth the Miracle, who moved to 25-19, put up three runs on starter Salvador Aguilar. Kyle Geiger led off with a double to left. Brock Peterson followed with a single to right that moved Geiger to third. A sac fly by Matt Tolbert made it 5-4. Trevor Plouffe drew a walk to put runners at first and second and then Jeremy Pickrel ripped a single to right. The right fielder tried to get Peterson at the plate, but he barreled over the catcher and the ball got by him and went to the backstop. Plouffe raced around and beat the throw to the plate and gave the Miracle the lead for good.

Martinez tossed the final two innings, getting into a small jam in the ninth. With two out he gave up a single to Josh Petersen and walked Jose Enrique Cruz. Alhaji Turay then ripped a ball into the gap in left-center, but Garrett Guzman raced it down for the final out. Martinez picked up his eighth save in as many attempts.

The Miracle fell behind early 3-0, but got all three runs back in the second. Tolbert led off with a walk and Plouffe laid down a bunt single. Pickrel ripped a two run triple to right-center and then scored on Luke Hughes' groundout. Pickrel went 2-3 with a triple, three RBI and a run scored.
