Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
The word of the day was rally at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. Playing a doubleheader on Sunday against the Lakeland Flying Tigers, the Palm Beach Cardinals battled on-and-off rain as well as late-game deficits after the teams were rained out on Saturday night.
But unfortunately for Palm Beach, neither effort was enough to secure a win. The Cardinals drop to 42-43 overall ahead of the All-Star break after starting the season 14-27.
Trailing 6-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth of Game 1, the Beach Birds leaned on RBIs from Darlin Moquete, Leonardo Bernal, and Sander Mora to pull within one run. After allowing Lakeland to answer with their own pair of runs in the seventh, Thomas Francisco connected on a two-run homer to pull within 8-7, but the Cardinals would come no closer in the first of two seven-inning affairs, and the score stood final.
Heading into what appeared to be the final frame of Game 2, the home side would tie the game on a Patrick Romeri two-RBI double and a one-run single from Mora. The Tigers once again pulled ahead in the top of the eighth, but Palm Beach went down swinging in the home half, on a two-run double from Francisco to get the Cardinals within 6-5. Once again however, Palm Beach failed to finish the comeback, and fell in the second game on three consecutive outs with the tying run in scoring position.
Starting catchers went a combined 5-5 on the day, with Leonardo Bernal going 3-3 in Game 1 and Jake Burns going 2-2 in Game 2. Starting pitcher Alex Cornwell took the loss in the opening contest, while Nelfri Contreras absorbed the defeat in the late afternoon matchup.
Palm Beach will take four days off for the All-Star break before returning to action in Daytona on Friday with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. The Cardinals return home next on August 2, when they face the Jupiter Hammerheads.
