Bradenton Marauders News Release
BRADENTON, Fla. - The Marauders grabbed a walk-off win, 1-0, over the Jupiter Hammerheads in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader at LECOM Park before falling, 5-3, in the second game.
The game one victory gave the Marauders (14-7, 43-43) back-to-back series wins, and the club has now won 11 of its last 13 games.
The first game saw both teams remain scoreless into the bottom of the seventh, when Juan Jerez led off the inning with a triple to right-center off Jupiter (10-11, 44-41) reliever Edison Suriel. After a walk to Sergio Campana, right-hander Joey Steele replaced Suriel and saw Bubba Chandler lift a fly ball to left field, deep enough to plate Jerez for a game-winning sacrifice fly.
Carlos Jimenez had tossed five scoreless innings as the Marauders' starter, striking out five and allowing just three hits. The right-hander stranded five baserunners, including three in scoring position.
Sergio Umana and Johan Montero combined for two innings of scoreless relief behind Jimenez, with Montero bailing Bradenton out of a second-and-third, one-out jam in the top of the seventh.
Jupiter's pitching proved nearly as effective. Marlins right-hander Anthony Bender struck out the side in the first inning on major league rehab, and lefty Sandro Bargallo held the Marauders scoreless across four innings out of the bullpen despite issuing four walks.
In the second game, the Hammerheads crafted an early lead against Marauders starter Luis Peralta, who allowed a Brady Allen solo home run in the first inning and a Jorge Caballero RBI-single in the second. The 2-0 Jupiter lead stood until the bottom of the fourth, as Bradenton mounted a threat with a Jerez leadoff walk and a Campana double. Chandler grounded out to shortstop, driving Jerez home, and Maikol Escotto followed with a game-tying RBI-single up the middle.
Hammerheads starter Gabe Bierman was otherwise effective, earning the win with six strikeouts and just four hits allowed over five innings.
Jupiter regained the lead in the fifth inning, when reliever Carlos Campos caught Hammerheads baserunner Javier Sanoja between second and third base on a grounder back to the mound but threw wildly past third base, allowing Sanoja to score.
In the top of the seventh, the Hammerheads strung four consecutive singles together and plated two insurance runs off left-hander Yoelvis Reyes. The Marauders answered with just one run in the bottom half via a Jase Bowen RBI-double before Jake Schrand retired the side for a two-inning save.
The Marauders return to action Friday, July 22 in Clearwater to open a three-game series against the Clearwater Threshers, Single-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at BayCare Ballpark.
