Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
Jupiter, FL - For the second day in a row the Palm Beach Cardinals struggled offensively, and the Fort Myers Miracle took advantage in the form of a 9-1 rout on Sunday afternoon at Roger Dean Stadium. The Miracle leapfrog the Cardinals with the win as Palm Beach falls to third place in the South Division standings for the first time in the second half.
One day after the Cardinals were held to just two hits in a 4-0 blanking by the Miracle, the Birds mustered just one run on four hits on a steamy afternoon in Jupiter. Bruce Caldwell went 2-for-4 with a triple to lead the Cardinals at the dish.
Fort Myers (29-19, 70-47) - the first team in the FSL to win 70 games - got great production from the entire lineup as eight starters recorded a hit and eight different players scored a run. Dalton Hicks led the way with a 3-for-5 showing at the plate and three RBI and a run scored. Aderling Mejia also notched three hits a dented the plate in the contest.
The Miracle opened the scoring when Hicks laced a double to right-center field in the third inning. Byron Buxton and Hicks scored on the play after reaching on a single and a walk, respectively.
Fort Myers added to its 2-0 lead with a four-spot in the fourth inning. The Miracle used five hits to push across four runs and pad their lead to 6-0. The inning was highlighted by RBI singles off the bats of Tyler Grimes and Jairo Rodriguez. The Miracle also scored via a Gerwuins Velazco passed ball and a sacrifice fly by Hicks.
Palm Beach (29-20, 65-53) stopped the bleeding momentarily by lighting the home half of the scoreboard in the sixth inning. Velazco took first after getting plunked by an Aaron Slegers fastball, moved to second on a groundout and was standing 90 feet away after Ildemaro Vargas singled to shallow left. Aledmys Diaz finished the job by hitting a sacrifice fly to deep left field, scoring Velazco and cutting the deficit to 6-1.
But the Miracle would pull away with three runs late and hold for the 9-1 victory.
Slegers (2-0) allowed one run on three hits over six innings, walked one and fanned four in just his second start for the Miracle.
Brian Gilbert, Madison Boer and Alex Muren finished the job out of the bullpen with three shutout frames to end the game for the Miracle.
Palm Beach starter Jimmy Reed (4-1), who led the Cardinals to a 5-0 record in his previous five games (all quality starts), was charged with six runs on seven hits over 3.0+ innings. He walked two and struck out six in the losing decision.
The two clubs will play the series finale on Monday night at Roger Dean Stadium. RH Silfredo Garcia (6-2, 3.58) will start for Palm Beach against LH Matt Tomshaw (9-4, 3.56) for Fort Myers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
