Palm Beach Cardinals News Release

The Palm Beach Cardinals were unable to hold a late lead against the Daytona Tortugas on Monday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium, and fell 3-2 in 10 innings.

Daytona's Gus Steiger, who began the frame as the automatic runner on second base, advanced to third and then scored on a pair of wild pitches in the first at bat of the frame. While Cardinals pitcher Roy Garcia was able to induce an inning-ending double play to limit the damage to a single run, Palm Beach was unable to answer in the bottom half of the 10th.

Daytona forced extra innings by tying the game in the eighth, when Tortugas center fielder Jay Allen II scored from third on a wild pitch after stealing second base earlier in the frame.

Garcia absorbed the loss for the Cardinals, while Ryan Cardona took the win for Daytona. Tortugas reliever Dennis Boatman earned the save with a shutout 10th.

The Cardinals stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, after infield singles from Luis Rodriguez and Jeremy Rivas. Wade Stauss was also left in scoring position for Palm Beach one inning earlier.

Starting pitcher Zane Mills was outstanding in his debut for the Beach Birds, allowing no runs and striking out six batters in five innings. Left-handed reliever Chris Gerard also recorded four strikeouts for the Cardinals in 2.2 frames pitched.

Offensively, Rivas, Rodriguez and Ramon Mendoza each paced the team with two base hits. The shortstop Rivas drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh, while the second baseman Mendoza scored on a passed ball in the fifth.

The teams are back in action on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m.
