Pair of No-Hitters Thrown in Thursday's Roseville Vs. Pioneer High School Game at Raley Field

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif., -- In a game that saw no-hitters thrown by both teams, Roseville defeated Pioneer, 2-0, Thursday night at Raley Field, home of the Sacramento River Cats. The game was part of the 2012 Raley Field High School Baseball Series presented by Sports Authority.
Roseville's Mark Reece threw a complete game no-hitter in last night's seven-inning contest, while Pioneer pitchers Robert Daugherty and Thomas Galart combined to hold Roseville hitless.
The feat impressed not only those in attendance, but River Cats general manager Jeff Savage. "The River Cats, along with our partner Sports Authority, couldn't be more proud of the student-athletes involved in last night's historic feat," Savage said. "We're looking forward to the rest of this year's high school baseball program at Raley Field, culminating in the inaugural showcase games on Sunday, June 3."
Pioneer head coach Craig Marquez was equally impressed. "Not only are they great baseball players, I could not have selected a better group from both sides to represent the game of baseball in such a beautiful venue."
Reece, the game's winning pitcher, promised his mother a no-hitter before the game, according to Roseville head coach Hank DeMello.
"I couldn't have written it any better for a coach, his program, or a pitcher who gave his mom a birthday wish," DeMello said.
While no-hitters themselves are fairly common, the dual no-hitter is a feat that is believed to have been achieved just one other time in Sacramento high school baseball. In 1947, Fred Besama pitched Lincoln High School to a 1-0 victory over Elk Grove's Ritchie Myers, with both pitchers hurling no-hitters.
Besama and Myers were not just known for their dual no-hitter; both men ended up reaching baseball's highest level, with the former breaking into the big leagues in 1956 with Baltimore and Myers earning a single at-bat with the Chicago Cubs on April 21, 1956.
Raley Field itself has seen two previous no-hitters at the Triple-A level. Portland Beavers pitchers Ryan Meaux, Aquilino Lopez and Cla Meredith combined on a 5-0 no-hitter against the River Cats on June 9, 2006, while Salt Lake Bees pitcher Sean O'Sullivan tossed a no-no against the Cats on July 28, 2009. The lone no-hitter thrown by a River Cat pitcher happened on May 1, 2001, when Micah Bowie threw a no-hitter against the Tacoma Rainiers at Cheney Stadium.
