Padres Purchase Contract Of Edgar Gonzalez

PORTLAND, Ore. - The San Diego Padres today purchased the contract of Portland infielder Edgar Gonzalez and designated infielder Callix Crabbe for assignment. Additionally, the Beavers placed left-handed pitcher Joe Thatcher on the active roster today after he was optioned to Portland on Sunday.

Gonzalez, 29, hit .293 (24-for-82) with a double, four home runs, 12 RBIs and 10 runs scored in 27 games for Portland. With the Beavers, Gonzalez appeared in games at first base, second base, third base, left field, right field and designated hitter.

It is the first major league promotion for Gonzalez, the older brother of Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez.

Thatcher, 26, was 0-4 with a 6.75 ERA (13er, 17.1ip), 12 strikeouts and seven walks in 16 relief appearances with the Padres this season. Acquired from Milwaukee along with right-handed pitcher Will Inman and left-handed pitcher Steve Garrison in exchange for right-handed pitcher Scott Linebrink on July 25, 2007, Thatcher was 1-0 with a 1.04 ERA (1er, 8.2ip) and 11 strikeouts in eight relief appearances with Portland last season.

The Beavers' active roster remains at its 24-man limit.
