Padres 40-man roster includes Fort Wayne flavor

Fort Wayne, IN - The San Diego Padres added six new players to their 40-man roster late Thursday, including five players who spent time in Fort Wayne during their minor league career.

Former number one overall pick Matt Bush, pitchers Jackson Quezada and Cesar Ramos, catcher Jose Lobaton and outfielder Luis Durango all had their minor league contracts purchased by the Padres organization. In addition, pitcher Cesar Carrillo, who did not appear in Fort Wayne, also was added to the roster.

A total of 16 players on the current 40-man roster for the Padres played in Fort Wayne at some point during their climb to the major league level, including pitcher Jake Peavy, outfielders Drew Macias and Will Venable and catcher Nick Hundley.

Durango and Quezada are the two most recent players to appear in Fort Wayne, after spending a majority or all of the 2008 season with the Wizards.

Durango spent most of the 2008 with the Wizards before being promoted to the Lake Elsinore Storm of the California League. He hit .305 with 11 doubles, three triples and one home run. He also scored 56 runs, drove in 25, walked 49 times and had 14 stolen bases. He finished third in the Midwest League with his .305 average and was also third in on-base percentage with a .395 average.

Quezada was 2-4 with a league-best 27 saves in 2008. He held opponents to a .180 average, struck out 79 in 63.2 innings and finished with a 2.12 earned run average after converting his first 13 save opportunities.
