
P-Bruins Win Season Opener 6-2 vs. Springfield

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Springfield Falcons 6-2 in front of 8,874 fans Sunday evening at the Dunkin Donuts Center. The P-Bruins got goals from Andy Wozniewski, and Trent Whitfield and two goals each from Jeff LoVecchio and Brad Marchand. The P-Bruins return to The Dunk Friday, October 9, 2009 for Magnet Schedule Night at 7:05 p.m. against the Hartford Wolf Pack.
The Falcons took a 1-0 lead at the 7:34 mark of the opening period, while on the power play. Chris Minard tallied his second goal of the season, with Taylor Chorney and Charles Linglet recording the assists. The P-Bruins returned less than a minute later at the 8:20 mark to tie the game at one. Zach Hamill had the puck in the neutral zone and left it along the boards for Vladimir Sobotka. He dropped it off to Marchand, who scored his first goal of the season. Providence took their first lead of the game at the 16:25 mark. Andrew Bodnarchuk held the puck at the left point and worked it to Adam McQuaid at the right point. He put a shot towards the net and LoVecchio picked up the loose puck to tally his first goal of the season. The P-Bruins took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
In the second period, the P-Bruins went ahead 3-1 at the 4:59 mark. Trent Whitfield skated the puck down the left wing and passed the puck towards the front of the net for Jamie Arniel. He left it off for Wozniewski, who netted his first goal of the season. Providence added to its lead at the 5:14 mark. Dany Sabourin played the puck from his crease up the boards to Marchand, who skated down the left wing to score his second goal of the game. The P-Bruins continued the scoring at the 17:30 mark, this time while on the power play. Alain Goulet had the puck at the left point and sent it to Wozniewski at the right point. He sent the puck towards the net and Whitfield tipped it in for his first goal of the season. The Falcons pulled within three goals while shorthanded at the 17:59 mark. Ryan O'Marra netted his first goal of the season with Johan Motin grabbing the lone assist. The P-Bruins led 5-2 after two periods.
Providence finished off the scoring at the 5:50 mark of the third period. LoVecchio tipped the puck into the net off a shot from Wozniewski, for his second goal of the game. Whitfield picked up the second assist as the P-Bruins went on to the 6-2 victory.
Sabourin stopped 21 of 23 shots for the P-Bruins, while Devan Dubnyk made 32 saves and Aaron Sorochan made 11 saves for the Falcons. The P-Bruins were 1-for-9 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.
The P-Bruins are back at home Friday at The Dunk for Magnet Schedule Night versus the Wolf Pack at 7:05 p.m. Providence hits the road for the first time this season against the Portland Pirates at the Cumberland County Civic Center Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Before returning to The Dunk on Sunday to wrap up the weekend with a Family Game at 4:05 p.m. against the Wolf Pack.
