PROVIDENCE, RI - Jeff Penner had a goal and two assists and Jeff LoVechio added a goal and an assist as the Providence Bruins defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at the Dunkin Donuts Center.
An exciting first period saw the game tied at two. The Sound Tigers struck first, just 12 seconds into the contest. After Dany Sabourin misplayed a clearing attempt in front of his net, Greg Moore picked up the loose puck and sent it into the slot for Trevor Smith who snapped a quick shot into an empty net for his fifth tally of the season.
The first period saw 11 penalties called between the two teams. Bridgeport's Trevor Gillies received a five minute major for elbowing at the 15:23 mark
Jeff Penner tied the game for the P-Bruins at the 4:36 mark in a four-on-four situation. Zach Hamill led a rush into the offensive zone and sent the puck ahead to Penner who fired a shot high into the net for his first goal of the year.
With 8:58 remaining in the period Greg Mauldin made it 2-1. After Sabourin made a save on a shot by Andrew MacDonald, Mauldin was in front to clean up the rebound. It was Mauldin's fourth goal of the year and second straight game Mauldin has found the back of the net.
Alain Goulet got the Bruins even again with 2:13 remaining in the period with another four-on-four tally. Hamill again brought the puck up the ice and this time found Goulet with a pass and he fought through a defender to lift a backhander into the net for his first goal of the year.
Smith and Mauldin were denied on breakaway scoring chances midway through the second period as Sabourin made glove saves on each. The Bruins grabbed the lead with 7:31 left in the second period. Jordan Knackstedt fired a blast from the blue-line which Jeff LoVecchio was in front of the net to deflect home for the score.
The Bruins took a two goal lead when Knackstedt cleaned up a rebound off a shot by Hamill at the 14:35 mark of the third period. Pascal Morency netted his first goal of the year for the Sound Tigers with one second remaining in the game.
Both teams failed to take advantage of power-play opportunities as the Sound Tigers were 0-for-8 with the man advantage while the Bruins were 0-for-9. Bridgeport held a 39-28 advantage in shots on goal. Sabourin stopped 37 shots for the victory while Scott Munroe made 24 saves in the losing effort.
The Sound Tigers are back in action Wednesday morning when they host the Adirondack Phantoms in the annual Cool Fun 101 Game. Face-off at Harbor Yard is set for 11:00 AM. For tickets please call TicketMaster at 1-800-745-3000.
