Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins fell to the Hartford Wolf Pack 5-2 Saturday evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Game 3 of the Atlantic Division Semi-Finals Series. The Wolf Pack now lead the best-of-seven series 2-1. The P-Bruins got goals from Martins Karsums and Levi Nelson, the first career playoff goals for each.
After a scoreless first period, Hartford came out firing in the second frame, scoring a pair of goals in the first 4:48 and both from defenseman Bryce Lampman. The first for the blueliner came only 26 seconds in after the puck trickled past Providence goalie Hannu Toivonen off the skate of P-Bruins captain Jay Leach. Bobby Sanguinetti had the lone assist. The second goal came with Providence short-handed, snapping a string of 28 consecutive successful penalty kills. Lampman earned his second point of the post-season as the helpers went to Alex Bourret and Jarkko Immonen. The P-Bruins got a goal less than one minute after the second Lampman score when Karsums planted the puck past Wolf Pack netminder Al Montoya after being set up in front by David Krejci and Sean Bentivoglio. The assist gave Krejci a 10-game point-streak dating back to the regular season while Bentivoglio has points in all three games this series. Later in the period, with only 35.8 seconds remaining, Hartford added another score to take a 3-1 lead as Brandon Dubinsky capitalized on a turnover in front of Toivonen for his first goal.
The Wolf Pack scored another pair of goals in the third period, sandwiched around Nelson's first professional point. Immonen first netted his second goal of the series at the 15:22 mark, connecting with Bourret and Nigel Dawes for the point and three-goal advantage. The P-Bruins got one back on Nelson's slap shot from the high slot, helped along by Ryan Glenn, with just under three minutes left. Then, with less than a second remaining in the contest, Dwight Helminen tallied an empty net goal for the 5-2 win.
In net, Toivonen stopped 21 shots to Montoya's 27 saves as Providence out-shot Hartford 29-26.
The P-Bruins were scoreless in six power play chances while the Wolf Pack converted on one of five man-advantage opportunities.
The series remains in Rhode Island with Game 4 on Tuesday and Game 5 on Thursday, both slated for 7:05 p.m. starts. Should the series go beyond Game 5, then the final two games of the set return to Connecticut with Game 6 on Saturday, April 28 and Game 7 scheduled for Sunday, April 29 in Hartford, both beginning at 7 p.m. Providence is 2-1 all-time in playoff series against Hartford, winning in 1999 and 2001 while falling in 2000.
