Providence Bruins News Release
Marlborough, MA -- The Providence Bruins fell to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 3-1 in their second preseason game this evening at the New England Sports Center. Christian Hanson scored the only goal for Providence and Niklas Svedberg and Adam Morrison made a combined 32 saves.
The game got off to an action packed start as Bobby Robins and Blair Riley dropped the gloves just 24 seconds after the opening faceoff and less than a minute after they were separated Tyler Randell and Brett Gallant mixed it up at center ice. Shortly thereafter Hanson opened the scoring and got the P-Bruins on the board at 2:44 with a shot past Anders Nilsson glove side. Justin Florek got the helper. Kelsey Wilson and former P-Bruin Nathan McIver exchanged punches in a heated bout in front of the Sound Tigers bench just over a minute later. Providence had their first power play opportunity at 4:02 but were unable to capitalize with the extra man. The Sound Tigers almost tied it up after Hanson went off for hooking and Bridgeport got one past the goalie after a scrum in front of the net but it was ruled no goal and that the net was off. The Sound Tigers did get on the board at 13:45 two seconds after the P-Bruins killed off a penalty. Bridgeport struck once more with 30 seconds remaining in the period on the power play.
The second period started off with good pressure from both sides. Svedberg exited the game midway through the period with 15 saves and Morrison went in net. Providence struggled with the power play in the middle frame when they were unable to capitalize on both chances they got. Bridgeport made it 3-1 when Nino Niederreiter stripped Morrison of the puck behind the net and sent him scrambling back where Niederreiter scored one-on-one.
Both teams came out strong at the beginning of the third period and Morrison stood strong between the pipes under the pressure including a big save early on in the period. Bridgeport had a two man advantage for 24 seconds after Florek went to the box for tripping and Matt Bartkowski went off for slashing. Trent Whitfield, Colby Cohen and Kevan Miller on the kill managed to keep the puck out of the back of the net. When Florek got back on the ice they killed off the second penalty to return the teams to full strength. Morrison continued to make big saves and stopped all the pucks that came at him in the final period for a total of 18 stops. The P-Bruins had the man advantage for the last minute of play in the game and put a lot of shots on Nilsson but could not get one past him and fell 3-1.
Providence will travel to the MassMutual Center on Saturday, October 6 where they will wrap up the preseason in a 7:00 p.m. contest against the Springfield Falcons.
The P-Bruins' Opening Night is on Friday, October 12th. The club faces the Manchester Monarchs at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in a 7:05 p.m. matchup. The P-Bruins' complete season schedule can be found on www.providencebruins.com .
