Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI -- The Providence Bruins fell to the Worcester Sharks this afternoon 4-3 in a shootout at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Jamie Tardif, Ryan Spooner and Garnet Exelby scored in regulation to help the team get a point.
The game opened up with pressure from both teams and the game moving back and forth on the ice. It did not take long for the Atlantic Division rivals to heat up as Kevan Miller and James Livingston dropped the gloves right off the faceoff. Less than a minute later, Providence penalty minute leader Bobby Robins and Matt Pelech mixed it up at center ice before both went spinning to the ice. The P-Bruins had plenty of good chances but the Sharks would open the scoring at 11:11 when a bad play gave the Sharks possession and Yanni Gourde beat Mike Hutchinson. Providence bounced back quickly when Chris Bourque found Tardif in front of the net on the power play to tie it up at 16:05. Spooner had the secondary assist.
Spooner picked up where he left off when the second period opened when just over a minute in he skated down the right wing and scored top shelf to give the P-Bruins a 2-1 lead. The second point gave Spooner his first multi-point game of the season and put him in first in points on the team. Defenseman Exelby extended the lead when his shot from the top of the left faceoff circle beat Alex Stalock. Justin Florek earned his first point of the season with the assist and Kyle MacKinnon got his second with the other assist. The P-Bruins kept the Sharks at bay in the middle frame and held them to only three shots while putting up 13 of their own bringing the shot total to 11 to 24 in favor of Providence for the period.
Worcester came out ready to make a comeback in the third period when they matched their shot total from the second period in the first minute of play. Their effort paid off when Bracken Kearns, who had two goals the last time the two teams faced off, pulled his team within a goal on the power play. Max Sauvé almost added to the lead on a one-on-one but got poked away. The Sharks evened the score minutes later when Brandon Mashinter's hard shot got past Hutchinson right off the faceoff. Neither team would hit the back of the net again in the period sending the game into a scoreless overtime and shootout for the second time this weekend at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. In the sixth round of the shootout Mashinter found the back of the net and Providence could not match his goal and the P-Bruins fell to the Sharks by a final of 4-3. Hutchinson turned aside 29 shots through 65 minutes of play and suffered the loss.
