Owlz Early Lead Not Enough for Victory
September 4, 2015 - Pioneer League (PL)
Northern Colorado Owlz News Release
OREM - An early lead by the Owlz was not enough to take home the victory tonight against the Idaho Falls Chukars. After a 1-2-3 inning by Jeff Malm to start the game, Orem came out of the gates scoring early in the first off of a RBI double by Jeff Boehm. The bats would quiet down after the early lead as the Owlz struggled at the plate, eventually taking the 8-5 loss.
The Chukars got onto the board in the second inning after Roman Collins hit a 2-run homerun, his fourth on the season, to give Idaho Falls a 2-1 lead. Malm continued to work hard through the third as he finished his night with two earned runs while striking out three.
He would be replaced in the fourth by a new face for the Owlz, Brandon Glazer. Although Glazer gave up four runs, he bounced back in his third inning of work as got out of the jam with runners on the corners.
The Owlz battled back in the seventh inning with five straight two-out hits. It all started with Tanner Lubach reaching on a single. He later came around to score the second run of the game as Juan Moreno hit an RBI single. He would be followed up by Franklin Torres' RBI single, his first hit on the night. The scoring continued as Brendon Sanger launched an RBI double into right field cutting the deficit to 8-4.
Orem threatened again in the ninth as Kenny Towns hit a solo homerun to lead off the inning. However, Jeff Boehm ended the game after striking out with runners in scoring position.
Jeff Malm records the loss falling to 5-2 on the season as the Owlz drop to 38-33 overall. Orem will face the Chukars again tomorrow night for the second game of a six-game series.
