Owls Fall to Martinsville, 3-1

MARTINSVILLE, VA. - The Forest City Owls dropped their contest against the Martinsville Mustangs, 3-1, Friday night at Hooker Field. The Owls fall to 3-3 in the second half and 19-14, while the Mustangs improve to 3-2 in the second half and 16-15 on the season.

Seth Cutler-Voltz (Virginia Commonwealth) got the starting nod for Forest City. Cutler-Voltz worked eight innings, allowing three runs on six hits, walking three batters without recording a strikeout. Cutler-Voltz took the loss.

Martinsville sent Jake Lambert (Binghamton) to the mound. Lambert tossed seven strong innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out four batters and walking two, earning the win.

The Mustangs struck first in the bottom of the second inning, when 2B Preston Lyon legged out an infield single and brought DH Derrick Hopkins (Southern) across the plate. Martinsville led 1-0 after two innings.

The Owls tied up the proceedings in the top of the fifth inning, when Danny Canela (N.C. State) blasted a home run over the right field wall. The solo shot was Canela's first of the year. Martinsville reclaimed the lead in the bottom half of the inning when Brad Vance (Southern Indiana) shot a single that scored Lyon. Martinsville owned a 2-1 advantage heading into the seventh inning stretch.

Martinsville added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Justin Sizemore (Liberty) doubled down the right field line, bringing John Faircloth (Charleston Southern) home. The Mustangs took a 3-1 lead into the ninth inning.

Canela, Reed Harper (Austin Peay), P.J. Torres (Austin Peay), and Michael Basil (Indiana) all recorded a hit apiece for Forest City. Lyon went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI for Martinsville.

Forest City and Martinsville will meet again tomorrow night at McNair Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
