Chico Outlaws News Release

CHICO, CA - Golden Baseball League All-Star Trevor Caughey continued his mastery of the Reno Silver Sox Sunday night at Nettleton Stadium - five days after allowing one unearned run in seven innings in Reno, Caughey surrendered just two unearned runs in eight innings of work, and the Outlaws backed him with a 15-hit attack to beat the Silver Sox 9-3 to avoid a sweep and salvage the finale of the three-game 4th of July weekend series.

The Outlaws never trailed in the contest, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning when Jose Valdez delivered a two-out single to knock in Jesse Kovacs. In the 4th Chico sent 10 men to the plate and put a crooked number on the scoreboard - Valdez led off the inning with a triple and was promptly driven home on a Julian Benavidez single to center. Following a walk to Lino Garcia, Bryan Silverman came through with an RBI single...Garcia then scored on a Steve Russell wild pitch...and Matt Ceriani singled home Silverman to put Chico up 5-0.

Caughey scattered four hits as he shut down Reno's offense through the first six innings, but an error left the door open in the 7th for Steve Alexander to bomb a two-run homer to center to make the score 5-2 and put the Silver Sox back in the game. Chico responded in the bottom of the 7th, plating three runs off Reno reliever Giorgio Fuda - Ceriani and Steve Boggs each contributed an RBI single and a bases loaded walk to Casey Garrison forced home another run to give the Outlaws an 8-2 lead. In the 8th inning Eric Pringle capped off a 4-for-4 night with an RBI single to make the score 9-2...and despite a 9th inning solo homer by D.J. Dixon, Chico closer Todd Gelatka got the final three outs without further incident to lock down the victory.

Caughey (4-2) struck out only one but threw only 97 pitches in his eight innings to earn the win...Russell (3-5) lasted just five innings to take the loss. In addition to Pringle's four hits, Boggs, Valdez, Silverman and Ceriani had two safeties apiece for the Outlaws...Reno was held to just seven hits on the night, with Doug Sanders leading the way with a 2-for-4 performance. Sunday's win improved Chico's record to 13-25 on the season...Reno slipped to 14-23 for the year. The Outlaws continue their homestand Monday with the first of three against the South Division-leading Orange County Flyers - former Chico Heat star Scott Navarro, signed prior to Sunday's game, will make his first professional start since 2003 in the series opener...left-hander Charles Merricks (4-0) is expected to go for the Flyers. First pitch is 7:05pm...hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
