Orange County Flyers News Release
(Dublin, CA. July 7, 2008) The Golden Baseball League (GBL) announced today that Orange County outfielder Patrick Breen and Calgary starting pitcher Evan Greusel have been named GBL Safeway Players of the Month for the first month of the season.
Greusel, 28, 6-3, 215 lbs is a right-handed pitcher who was drafted out of the University of Oklahoma in the 17th round of the 2002 draft by the Florida Marlins. After three years in Florida's minor league organization he was released and immediately signed by the Calgary Vipers in their inaugural season in 2005. He has gone on to become the winningest pitcher in Viper history as he compiled a record of 24-10 for Calgary prior to this year. Greusel has already won two Safeway Pitcher of the Week Awards in the first five weeks of the season and easily garnered the Safeway Pitcher of the Month Award for June. His outstanding performance during the first month of the season inlcuded posting a perfect 6-0 record in eight starts as he pitched a league-leading 51 innings in which he struck out 36 batters and walked only 7 with an E.R.A. of just 2.10 as he led his Vipers to the top of the North Division standings.
Breen, 25, 6-3, 215 lbs is an outfielder who was drafted in the 21st round of the 2004 amateur draft by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2004 out of the University of Houston. Slugging his way through the low minors, he rocketed to Double-A in just 2 and half years -- being promoted from the High-A California League while leading that league in home runs at the mid-way mark in 2006. His batting average tailed off and he was released after two years at Double-A Montgomery in the Southern League. An Orange County native, he quickly signed with the Orange County Flyers and has been hammering GBL pitching all season. Winner of the Week Four Safeway Player of the Week, the left-handed power hitter has now been tabbed as the June Safeway Player of the Month. His outstanding performance during the first month of the season included a batting average of .433 (2nd), a league leading 14 home runs, 47 RBIs (2nd) in just 30 games and also led the league with 6 triples and a slugging average of .950 as his Flyers climbed to the top of the South Division standings. He has kept up his torrid pace during early July and now leads the league in all three Triple Crown catgories.
