Calgary avoids the sweep

Long Beach Armada News Release


The Armada were up 5-2 in the fifth inning until the Vipers offense exploded for a three run fifth and two run sixth innings. The Fleet came close to climbing back in the ball game, but could score only one more run for a final score of 8-6.

Armada starter Steve Smyth, starting his first game, pitched well going 4 1/3 giving up 3 runs on 5 hits while walking 1 and striking out 3 Vipers. He was taken out in the fourth due to soreness in his forearm, a precautionary move by manager Steve Yeager. C David Ramirez had a big night going 2 for 3 with 4 RBI and a run scored. 2B Cleatus Davidson went a perfect 3 for 3 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored. P Sean Buller (2-1) relieved Smyth, getting the loss and going 1 2/3 innings giving up 4 unearned runs on 4 hits while walking 1 and striking out 2.

Vipers starter Reggie Rivard went 2 1/3 innings giving up 2 runs on 3 hits while walking 1 and striking out 2. He was taken out in the second due to a sore groin. Also a precautionary move by manager Mike Busch. P Jon Huizinga (1-1) got the win going 2 2/3 innings giving up 3 runs on 5 hits while striking out 3. P P.J. Bevis got his second save going 2 innings giving up no hits or runs and striking out 2.

RF Darryl Brinkley continued his on base streak to 29 games now going 2 for 5 with a HR and two runs scored. 2B Jorge Mejia went 2 for 3 driving in two and scoring two. LF Drew Miller went 3 for 5 with a HR, 2 RBI and a run scored.

Probable starters for tomorrows game against the Edmonton Cracker Cats are P Nick Bierbrodt (1-4) for Long Beach and TBA for Edmonton. Game time is 7:05pm.
