Chico Outlaws News Release

CHICO, CA - Derrick Loop became the Golden Baseball League's first five-game winner and Daniel Nava's three-run homer highlighted an 11-hit attack as the Chico Outlaws downed the Reno Silver Sox 8-2 Friday night...the Outlaws taking the rubber match of a three-game series at Nettleton Stadium in Chico.

The visiting Silver Sox wasted little time getting on the scoreboard - Jose Rodriguez' two-out double in the top of the 1st inning plated Ryan Kowalski to give Reno a 1-0 lead...then in the 3rd the Silver Sox picked up another run when Victor Hall scored on a double by Juan Senreiso. But that would be all Reno would score the rest of the night, as Loop combined with relievers John Jefferson, Jesse Oster and Jake McLintock to hold the Silver Sox to just three hits over the final six innings. Chico went ahead to stay in the bottom of the 3rd, and it was the long ball that put the Outlaws in front - with Jesse Kovacs and Scott Dragicevich aboard, Nava belted a James Johnson breaking ball over the right field wall to give Chico a 3-2 advantage.

The Outlaws added to their lead in the 4th inning when Dragicevich delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Jason Matteucci...Chico still led 4-2 when they put the game away in the 7th, scoring four times on just one hit - with one out, Nava singled off Reno reliever Mike Peck; Jason Van Meetren followed with a walk and two batters later Ricky Bambino was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Peck then issued back-to-back free passes to Matteucci and Eric Pringle to force home runs...Steve Boggs reached on a two-out throwing error by Silver Sox shortstop Maurice Cole, allowing Bambino and Matteucci to score and put the Outlaws up 8-2. Oster and McLintock took it from there, getting the final six outs...the Outlaws turned their fourth double play of the game in the 9th to end it and give Chico its eighth win over Reno in 12 tries this year.

Loop (5-1) allowed just one earned run in five-and-two-thirds innings to pick up the victory...Johnson (0-2) took the loss for the Silver Sox. Nava paced the Outlaws offense with two hits and three RBI; Dragicevich and Matteucci also had two hits and Boggs extended his hitting streak to a league-high 17 games with a 1st inning single...Hall had two of Reno's five hits on the night. Friday's win improved Chico's season record to 20-8 and, thanks to Long Beach's 9-3 loss to Orange County, the first place Outlaws are now three games in front in the race for the GBL's first half title...with the loss, Reno dropped to 11-16. Chico travels to southern California Saturday for the first of a two-game weekend set with the Orange County Flyers...right-hander Phil Springman (1-0) will get the start in the series opener; the Flyers are expected to counter with righty Robert Salini (3-1).
