Orange County Flyers News Release
The Flyers jumped all over the Long Beach Armada early and then used a solid pitching performance to sink the Armada and cruise to a much needed victory 9-3...
The Flyers came out swinging with a vengeance and weren't going to be denied as they used a 6-run 1st inning to catapult themselves to a 9-3 victory and halt their losing streak at 8 games against the rival Long Beach Armada on Friday night at Goodwin Field in Fullerton.
The Armada, who were playing without top-hitter Jeff LaRue due to a sprained finger suffered in Thursday nights victory, started off the game right where they left off Thursday night as Armada CF John Kaplan continued to wreak havoc on the Flyers by getting a lead-off walk against Flyers starting pitcher Mike Natale (2-1) and then stealing 2nd for his league-leading 18th steal of the season. After Natale walked LF Dan Trumble on 4 straight pitches, the Armada executed a perfect double steal and Kaplan added another steal to his resume to get runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. DH Chris Wakeland brought home Kaplan with a sacrifice fly to left-center that gave the Armada a 1-0 lead.
That would be the only lead the Armada would have on the night as the Flyers responded with 6 runs in the bottom half of the 1st. Flyers CF Garry Templeton II started the big inning with a 1 out walk against Armada starting pitcher Marcel Vianna (1-1). Flyers LF Rich Pohle singled to left on a hit and run play and DH Peanut Williams followed with a bloop RBI single off his hands to right that scored Templeton and tie the game 1-1.
After Vianna hit 1B Scott Goodman to load the bases, 3B Hector Zamora took advantage of the opportunity with a 2-run double down the 1st base line for a 3-1 Flyer lead they would not relinguish.
A couple of Armada misplays in the field that included an error by 1B Jason Mooneyham on an infield pop-up off his glove which allowed both P. Williams and Goodman to score and another throwing error by C David Ramirez on a RF Mark Okano steal at 2nd that got Okano to 3rd where he came in to score on a C Buddy Morales RBI single to left did in the Armada as it increased the Flyers' lead to a seemingly insumountable 6-1 lead after 1 inning.
Natale pitched 8 innings of solid ball, allowing only 2 earned runs on 7 hits, to go along with 8 strikeouts for his 2nd victory of the season.
Morales and Pohle led the Flyers attack, as Morales had a break-out game going 3-3 with an RBI, a run scored, and a his 1st triple of the season. Pohle continued to pace the Flyers this season, going 3-5 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.
It was the 1st victory for the Flyers after 8 consecutive losses and hope to continue their momentum tomorrow night against the Chico Outlaws here at Goodwin Field in Fullerton.
