Chico Outlaws News Release
The sputtering Chico Outlaws offense showed some definite signs of life Tuesday, but the Orange County Flyers had an even better night at the plate, pounding out 15 hits and cruising to an 8-2 victory over the Outlaws to complete a sweep of a two game mini-series at Goodwin Field on the campus of Cal St. Fullerton.
The Flyers wasted no time in building a comfortable lead, plating four runs in the 1st inning off Outlaws starting pitcher Steve Jones - with two outs, Rich Pohle doubled, went to third on an infield single by Peanut Williams and scored on Steve Goodman's RBI single to left. Bret Levier then launched a three-run homer to left to put Orange County on top 4-0. In the 3rd the Flyers would score again. Williams leading off the inning with a single and eventually coming home on Gabriel Mayorga's fielder's choice grounder. In the 4th Orange County went up 6-0 when Gary Templeton II was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a Pohle double and scored on a groundout by Williams.
The Outlaws were racking up plenty of hits against Orange County starter Jamie Douglas, but like Monday's series opener, leaving several runners in scoring position. The Flyers chased Jones in the 5th and extended their lead to 7-0 when Aaron Davis singled home Buddy Morales, but the Outlaws answered with a run in the 6th - Daniel Nava scoring on a two-out single by Brock Ungricht. Chico cut Orange County's lead to 7-2 when Jesse Kovacs doubled, went to third on a single by Scott Dragicevich and came home on a Douglas wild pitch. But that's as close as Chico would get, as the Flyers plated a run off reliever Todd Gelatka in the 8th inning and Douglas got Steve Boggs to ground into a game-ending double play in the 9th to give Orange County their fourth straight win while handing the Outlaws their fourth loss in a row.
Douglas (1-1) tossed his first-ever complete game to earn the win, while Jones (0-1) suffered the loss. Pohle paced the Orange County attack with a 4-for-5 night; Williams contributed three hits while Goodman and Davis chipped in with two safeties apiece. The Outlaws had nine hits, with Boggs and Ungricht collecting two apiece. With the loss, Chico drops to 6-6 on the season, while Fullerton takes over second place in the Golden Baseball League with a 7-5 mark. The Outlaws continue their road trip Wednesday in St. George, Utah, when they take on the expansion Roadrunners'left-hander Derrick Loop (2-1) will be on the mound for Chico in the series opener, with St. George expected to counter with lefty Mike Storey (0-1).
Game time is 6:05pm. Hear all the action with Rory Miller beginning at 5:35pm with the Outlaws pre-game show on SportsFan 101.7 FM ESPN Radio.
