Bittersweet win for Yuma Scorpions

June 20, 2007 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Yuma Scorpions News Release

Yuma starting pitcher Chris Langlois fractured his arm while delivering a pitch in the seventh winning of Tuesday night's 6-4 win over the Long Beach Armada.

The Tampa, Fla. native fell to the ground abruptly in pain after hearing a pop in his arm and was taken to a nearby hospital where he learned of the bad news.

The injury bug continues to bite Yuma as infielder Ryan Gipson is already out for the season with broken bones in both hands and first baseman Nik Crouch is playing through his own banged up thumb as a result of being hit by a pitch.

The loss of Langlois spoiled another great performance from the Golden Baseball League's best team.

Osvany Almario and Pascual Matos drove in two runs apiece on sixth-inning singles, which capped off a four-run sixth to give the visitors a 5-2 lead.

The Armada responded later as right fielder Dan Trumble recorded a two-run two-out triple in the eighth inning to get the Armada within a run at 5-4.

But the Scorpions got one of those runs back as Matos led off the ninth with a home run off Dane DeLaRosa to secure the win at 6-4. Yuma improved to 11-1 with the best record in the Golden Baseball League.

The Long Beach Armada dropped their third straight game to start their season-long nine-game home stand.

The Armada (5-7) led 1-0 and 2-1 before Yuma exploded on starting pitcher Rik Currier (2-1). Currier is the only pitcher to defeat the Scorpions so far this season.

The two teams battle again at Blair Field on Wednesday at 7:05pm. The game can be heard on KBLU 560 AM in Yuma as well as on yumascorpions.com
