Orange County Flyers News Release
Orange County Flyers continued their winning ways at home by completing a two-game sweep of the Chico Outlaws.
Solid starting pitching by Flyers LHP Jamie Douglas (1-1), continued hot hitting by LF Rich Pohle, a 3-run bomb by SS Bret Levier (his first of the season), and a controversial call by the umpire in the bottom of the 1st inning, all contributed to a 8-2 victory for the Flyers.
With 2 outs in the bottom of the 1st, Flyers LF Rich Pohle started the 4-run first inning with his team-leading 6th double of the season off of Outlaw rookie RHP Steve Jones (0-1).
Flyers DH Peanut Williams, who was back in the lineup after missing 3 games with a groin injury, then popped a foul ball towards the Chico dugout which was caught by Outlaw C Jesse Oster, but was ruled out of play much to the dismay of Outlaw manager Mark Parent, who argued the call to no avail.
On the next pitch, Williams singled down the 3rd base line. He was followed by another single by 1B Scott Goodman and then SS Bret Levier capped off the Flyers big inning with a 3 run home run to left (his 1st of the season) for a 4-0 Flyers lead.
After threatening in the 2nd inning, the Flyers scored a run in the 3rd off an RBI fielder's choice by 3B Gabriel Mayorga that scored DH Peanut Williams.
The Flyers scored another run in both the 4th and 5th innings off another RBI fielder's choice by DH Peanut Williams that scored CF Garry Templeton II and a single by RF Aaron Davis off RHP Jake McLintock (0-1), who replaced starting pitcher Steve Jones (4.1 IP, 9 hits, 7 earned runs) with 1 out in the 5th to make it a 7-0 lead heading into the 6th inning.
An error on Flyers 1B Scott Goodman led to a lead off base runner against Flyers starting pitcher LHP Jamey Douglas in the 6th and it ended up hurting the Flyers and ending Douglas' shutout as the Outlaws C Brock Ungricht hit a bloop single in front of Flyers LF Rich Pohle to score Outlaws 1B Scott Dragicevich.
Flyers starter and player of the game Jamey Douglas pitched a complete game for the Flyers, improving his record to (1-1) on the year while giving up only 1 ER on the 9 hits and 3 strikeouts.
Flyers LF Rich Pohle continued his hot hitting and impressive defense, going 4-5 with 2 doubles, a run scored, and an impressive run-saving diving catch in the top of the 2nd off 2B Eric Pringle to lead the Flyers attack.
The Orange County Flyers play again this Thursday night against the league leading Yuma Scorpions at Goodwin Field in Fullerton.
