Chico Outlaws News Release
RENO, NV - Mike Mallory's three-run homer in the top of the 10th inning capped a five-RBI day and provided the game-winner as Chico rallied to defeat Reno 9-7 Monday afternoon at Piccole Park...the Outlaws earning a split of their two-game mini-series with the Silver Sox and earning just their second road victory of the season.
In a battle of staff aces, Reno's Ben Thurmond and Grant Gregg of Chico were on their games early as neither offense could get anything going through the first three innings. The Silver Sox finally broke the seal in the 4th - two-run doubles by Caleb Maher and Evan Sobel put Reno in front 4-0. Chico responded by sending 10 men to the plate in the 6th inning and roughing up Thurmond for five runs - Jesse Kovacs got the Outlaws on the board with a two-run homer...later in the frame Mallory's two-run single tied the game and Craig Kuzmic followed with an RBI single to put Chico in front 5-4. The lead was short-lived, though, as the Silver Sox plated a run in the bottom of the 6th as Sobel doubled home Philip Grau to knot up the game at five apiece.
That's the way it stayed until the 10th inning when Chico went ahead to stay - one-out singles by Alex Froloff and Steve Booker and a Bobby Gandolfo groundout put the Outlaws up 6-5...then two batters later Mallory crushed a Jason Martinez pitch over the right field wall, extending Chico's lead to 9-5. Reno rallied in the bottom of the 10th as Victor Hall smacked a two-out, two-run homer and singles by Mike Done and Marcus Jensen got the potential winning run to the plate...but Outlaws reliever A.J. Ampi got Edgar Varela to ground out to end the game and give Chico only its second victory over the Silver Sox in eight tries this season.
George Huguet (2-1) - the second of three pitchers used by the Outlaws - got credit for the win, with Martinez (1-2) suffering the loss. Chico racked up 13 hits on the day, with Gandolfo, Mallory, Froloff and Desi Wilson collecting two safeties apiece...Reno had 15 hits, with Jensen, Sobel and Grau each banging out three hits. Monday's win improved the Outlaws record to 8-10 on the season, while the Silver Sox dropped to 12-4. Chico's nine-game road trip continues Tuesday in San Diego with the first of three against the defending Golden Baseball League champion Surf Dawgs...right-hander Mike Cosgrove (0-0) will start for the Outlaws in the series opener...San Diego is expected to counter with righty Aaron Wilson (1-1). Game time is 7:05pm at Tony Gwynn Stadium on the San Diego State campus.
