Chico Outlaws News Release
(Calgary, Alberta, Canada. September 10th, 2010) Chico Outlaws right fielder Mitch Einertson finished a triple shy of the cycle on Friday night, knocking in four runs as the Outlaws got by Calgary 6-3 in game two of the GBL North Division playoffs.
Due to a rainout in Chico on Wednesday that forced the postponement of game two, the Outlaws were the designated home team for the game, played at Foothills Stadium in Calgary.
Mark McLemore (1-0), a former big leaguer with Houston in 2007, got the start for the Outlaws and was magnificent, throwing a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Johnny Kaplan's single with one out. Overall, McLemore surrendered just two hits and struck out six without allowing a run.
Calgary's Mac Suzuki (0-1), making his second start of the year against Chico, did not fare as well. Surrendering five runs on five hits, Suzuki was lifted in the sixth inning after giving up three runs. Suzuki did have six strikeouts.
Chico got on the board first in the fourth inning when Bobby Hill was hit by a Suzuki pitch to lead off the inning. One batter later, Einertson launched his first postseason homerun of the year over the left field fence, giving the Outlaws a 2-0 lead. Einertson had nine homeruns in the regular season and was starting in place of Mikael Jova, who did not make the trip to Calgary due to a passport issue.
Three more runs would score for the Outlaws in the sixth off Suzuki. Hill singled and made it to second when the ball eluded Vipers' center fielder Julio Ramirez. After a walk to left fielder JJ Sherrill, Einertson came through for the second time on the night, smacking a two-RBI double down the left field line, putting Chico up 4-0. Einertson eventually scored when Santo DeLeon's ball was misplayed in right field by Kaplan for an error.
The Vipers plated their first run on an RBI single from Caonabo Cosme scored Kevin Price, who reached on an error by DeLeon.
In the eighth inning, Calgary cut the lead to 5-2 on Brent Metheny's solo homerun to left off reliever Josh Dew, who was replaced by Justin Segal immediately after giving up the long ball.
The Outlaws added some insurance in the bottom of the eighth when first baseman John Urick's RBI double drove in Einertson, who singled to lead off the frame. Chico led 6-2 heading into the ninth inning.
Calgary scraped together one more run in the ninth in the last ups on an RBI double by Cosme to make the final score 6-3.
Dew pitched one and two-thirds innings of relief, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits, while Segal picked up a save by going one and a third innings of relief, surrendering just the one run.
Chico leads the best-of-five series two games to none with game three set for Saturday at Foothills Stadium, starting at 5:05 PM MDT. Kris Honel (8-3) starts for the Outlaws opposite Dusty Gober (10-2) of Calgary.
All Outlaws playoff games will be broadcast live on the Outlaws Baseball Network and fans can catch all the action with Dan Hawkins, the voice of the Outlaws. Saturday's pre game show will start at 4:50 PM MDT. Watch live on www.justin.tv.com/chicooutlawsbaseball or audio only at www.chicooutlaws.com.
