Chico Outlaws News Release
Calgary, Alberta - The Chico Outlaws got runs early and often in Saturday's 13-6 win over the Calgary Vipers, finishing off a three-game sweep of the defending Golden Baseball League champions on the road at Foothills Stadium and earning a date in the GBL Championship Series for the first time since 2007.
Kris Honel (1-0) made his first post-season start of the year for Chico and kept up the string of great starting pitching by the Outlaws, going seven-plus innings, giving up four earned runs on just three hits, including a two-run homer by Vipers' shortstop Jorge Meija in the bottom of the third inning for Calgary's first two runs of the contest.
Chico put up three runs in the top of the first inning of Calgary's Dustin Gober (0-1), who lasted just two and a third innings before being lifted by manager Morgan Burkhart. Gober gave up a total of seven earned runs on five hits and walking three.
The Outlaws cranked up the run machine again the third frame, plating runs five times and knocking Gober out of the game. The Vipers pitching staff never found a go-to guy on the night, using eight different pitchers in their last-ditch effort to salvage a game in the series between the two top teams in the GBL North Division this year.
Four more runs would score in the fourth inning for the Outlaws and a final run in the fifth as Chico (3-0) pounded out 14 hits in the game's first five innings. Right fielder Mitch Einertson went 3-4 with an RBI and three runs scored, while catcher Robby Alcombrack had four RBIs on the night. Shortstop Anthony Manuel, making his first start of the series, went 2-5 with two RBIs as well for the Outlaws.
Calgary (0-3) finished with just six hits on the night.
Chico moves on to face the winner of the Maui-Orange County series in the GBL Championship Series, which starts Tuesday night at Nettleton Stadium in Chico. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Outlaws office at 345-3210, going online at www.chicooutlaws.com, or by coming to the box office on the day of the game.
