Chico Outlaws News Release

The San Diego Surf Dawgs came in to Nettleton Stadium for Friday's series opener as the Golden Baseball League's best-hitting team, and they didn't fail to impress, as they banged out 15 hits and prevailed over the Chico Outlaws, 8-2. The Outlaws offense was anything but potent, as it didn't collect a base hit after the fourth inning. The loss lowers Chico's second-half record to 13-5, while San Diego's improves to 9-8.Every Surf Dawgs starter recorded at least one hit, with Tony Garcia going 3 for 5 with a run batted in, and nobody in the lineup had more than two RBI.

Just like the previous night, the Outlaws scored first Friday. After Jason Matteucci grounded out, Bobby Gandolfo, Desi Wilson and Mike Mallory all singled consecutively, but Gandolfo was erased on a baserunning play. Later in the inning, Jason Van Meetren rifled a single that scored Wilson and Mallory and gave the Outlaws a 2-0 advantage.

Outlaws starter Grant Gregg entered the game having won five of his last six decisions and he started out well. He set down the first seven San Diego batters, three by strikeout, but ran into trouble in the third and fifth innings and ended up with the loss. Gregg's final line was six-plus innings, seven runs, six of them earned, and four strikeouts. His record falls to 5-4.

San Diego jumpstarted its offense in the top of the third with back-to-back singles from Victor Roldan and Jeremy McCann after one was out. Derrick Pyles plated the first run of the rally with his double that scored Roldan; the next hitter, Garcia, singled to drive in McCann. Adam Mandel knocked in the third run of the inning with a fielder's choice grounder and the Surf Dawgs grabbed a 3-2 lead.

The Surf Dawgs put another three-spot on the scoreboard in the fifth with help from the Outlaws defense. Gregg had two outs with runners on first and third but failed to get the final out and was burned for three runs, two of them earned. Mandel and Scott Goodman banged RBI singles before Matt Maloney hit a slow grounder to Gandolfo at second base. Gandolfo booted the ball, which allowed Mandel to score and Goodman to move to third. After Gandolfo retrieved the ball, he made an alert play and threw to third to catch Goodman straying from the bag. A pickle ensued and the Outlaws escaped the situation once Todd Gossage slapped-on the tag.

The Outlaws offense was neutralized by Surf Dawgs starter Jake Meyer (3-3), who held Chico to the two first-inning runs on the way to the victory. He completed five innings, allowing six hits and striking out one. Brent Pourciau followed Meyer and he tossed four innings of no-hit ball to record his first save of the season.

Van Meetren was the only Chico player with two hits, as he went 2 for 4 with the team's only runs batted in.

Tomorrow night's game will feature a worldly pitching matchup, as Chico plans to send Hideki Nagasaka (3-1, 6.25 ERA) out against San Diego's Yoankis Turino (0-0, 2.13 ERA). Nagasaka is a native of Japan while Turino hails from Cuba. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Nettleton Stadium.
