(Pleasanton, CA. August 4, 2006) The Golden Baseball League announced today that C Marcus Jensen of the Reno Silver Sox and RHP Jeremy Sugarman of the Fullerton Flyers are winners of the Player and Pitcher of the Month Awards for July.
Already having won a player of the week award to start the season, Marcus Jensen really heated up in July as his bat and defense led the Reno Silver Sox to the first half title. He hit .362 for the month with 34 hits, 11 doubles, and 4 home runs while driving in 20 RBIs and scoring 23 runs. In addition, he walked an astonishing 24 times and led the league with a .500 on-base percentage. Jensen, originally a first round pick of the San Francisco Giants, has major league experience in seven consecutive seasons between 1996 and 2002 and was also a member of the 2000 U.S. Olympic Gold-Medal Baseball team. He was selected as a GBL All-Star this season as well. For the year, Jensen is in the top five in the GBL in almost all offensive categories and leads the league in doubles (21), runs scored (47), on-base percentage (.463), extra base hits (31), and walks (43). His .340 batting average is second-best just five points behind leader Adam Mandel of the San Diego Surf Dawgs.
Other position players considered for the award were Fullerton's Peanut Williams and Garry Templeton II, Chico's Desi Wilson and Craig Kuzmic, and San Diego's Matt Maloney and Adam Mandel.
Jeremy Sugarman, of the Fullerton Flyers, swept the Pitcher of the Month award voting for July as he went 3-1 with a 1.65 ERA in six starts during the month. He threw three complete games, including a shutout, and averaged over 7 innings per start while striking out 31 and walking only 7 batters. He has been key to the Flyers fast start in the second half as his two complete game wins in late July helped to propel his team into the pennant race. Sugarman, a native of Malibu, CA, played college ball at UC Santa Barbara and then began an outstanding two-year stint of independent pro baseball with the North Shore Spirit of the now-defunct NorthEast League. With the Spirit, he went 17-1 over two years before being signed by the Cincinnati Reds in 2004. He played in the High A Carolina League for the Reds before being released and joined the Golden Baseball League last season.
Other pitchers who received consideration for Pitcher of the Month include: Chico's George Huguet, Phil Springman, and Grant Gregg; Fullerton's Wes Faust and Chris Jakubauskas; Reno's James Johnson; Long Beach's Chris Testa; and San Diego's EJ Shanks.
