Chico Outlaws News Release

CHICO, CA - The Chico Outlaws survived a grand slam that broke up a scoreless deadlock, and thanks to two huge two-out errors by Orange County, the Outlaws scored six runs in the 7th inning and held on to post a 6-5 come-from-behind victory over the visiting Flyers Wednesday night at Nettleton Stadium...Chico evening the three-game series at one win apiece.

Right-handers Jake McKinley of Chico and Orange County's Nate Holguin locked up for a great pitcher's duel through five innings - while McKinley wiggled out of a bases loaded jam in the 1st inning and the Flyers left runners in scoring position in the 2nd and 5th, Holguin allowed only two Outlaws runners to reach second base through the first five frames. Orange County finally broke through in the 6th - walks to Peanut Williams and Johnny Coit and a single by Buddy Morales loaded the bases, and Garry Templeton II promptly went yard, homering to left...the grand slam giving the Flyers a big 4-0 lead.

It stayed that way until the 7th when Chico struck for all six of their runs - Jason Matteucci's RBI single plated Jason Van Meetren and signaled the end of the night for Holguin...Eric Pringle then delivered a sacrifice fly off reliever Jason Howerton to knock in Todd Gossage to whittle the deficit to two. With two outs, Steve Boggs then singled home Matteucci to make it 4-3 - then following a walk to Jesse Kovacs, Scott Dragicevich hit a high chopper down the third base line...Mark Okano fielded the ball on the run, but his throw sailed past Williams at first base allowing both Boggs and Matteucci to score and give the Outlaws the lead. Two batters later Van Meetren reached on a throwing error...Dragicevich came home on the play to put Chico up 6-4. Orange County scored a run in the 8th off reliever Jesse Oster to cut the Outlaws lead to one...then in the 9th the Flyers put the potential tying and go-ahead runs aboard against Chico closer Todd Gelatka. But Gelatka rose to the challenge, striking out Coit and Morales to end the threat and the ballgame.

Jake McLintock (2-1), the second of four pitchers used by Chico, got credit for the win, with Gelatka picking up his league-leading 13th save of the season...Howerton (0-2) took the loss despite not allowing an earned run. Boggs and Daniel Nava each had two hits to lead the Outlaws offense...while Bacani and Bret Levier combined for four of the Flyers nine hits on the night. With Wednesday's win, Chico improved to 3-4 in the season's second half and 28-17 overall...Orange County slipping to 3-5 in the second half and 22-24 for the year. The rubber match of the three-game set is slated for Thursday, with right-hander Nick Singleton (2-3) going for the Outlaws...righty Reed Dickert (3-3) will be on the mound for the Flyers. Game time is 7:05pm...listen to all the action with "The Voice" of the Outlaws, Rory Miller, on the internet or on SportsFan 101.7 FM ESPN Radio.
