Chico Outlaws News Release
CHICO, CA - The Chico Outlaws combined 15 hits with 11 walks and five hit batters to tie a club record for runs in a game...the Outlaws thumping the St. George Roadrunners 21-12 in the opener of a three game series at Nettleton Stadium.
Chico won its second straight on the current homestand as five different starters knocked in three or more runs - Daniel Nava got things started in the 1st inning when he blasted his 10th home run of the year with a man aboard...then in the 2nd Eric Pringle knocked in John Matteucci with a base hit to right field and later scored when Steve Boggs bombed a homer to over the center field wall, giving Chico a quick 5-0 lead. In the 3rd the Outlaws doubled their lead despite producing just two hits...Chico batted around and scored five times, with Scott Dragicevich delivering an RBI single and Boggs knocking in a pair with a two-out single to right to make the score 10-0.
St. George got on the board in the 5th inning on a Ryan Stevenson solo homer and a two-run double by Brett Flowers, trimming the Outlaws advantage to 10-3...but Chico answered in the bottom of the 5th by sending 10 men to the plate and once again plating five runs - Pringle singled home a pair, Jesse Kovacs had an RBI double, Craig Kuzmic singled home a run and Dragicevich added a sacrifice fly to make the score 15-3. The Roadrunners plated two in the 6th to make it 15-5...but in the bottom of the 6th the Outlaws would go up 18-5 on a two-run double by Kovacs and an RBI single by Nava. Greg Lemon's two-run single in the 7th brought St. George to within 18-7...but in the 8th Chico officially put the game away with three runs off reliever Danny Hall; Dragicevich providing the key blow with a two-run double. Down 21-7, the Roadrunners scored five runs in the 9th off Outlaws reliever Tyler Pierson - punctuated with St. George's first-ever grand slam, provided by Gary Harris - but it was far too little and far too late as Pierson got the final two outs to lock down the Chico victory.
Jake McKinley (3-3) started for Chico and went six innings to get the win...Devin Collis (0-1), making his first start of the year, went just three innings to take the loss. The Outlaws had 15 hits, with Boggs going 4-for-5 with four RBI...Dragicevich added a pair of hits and four runs batted in...Kovacs finished 3-for-5, added three ribbies and tied the team's single game club record with four runs scored...Nava went 2-for-2 and knocked in three...and Pringle chipped in with a pair of singles and three RBI. Brett Flowers went 4-for-5 to pace St. George's 12-hit attack, while Harris knocked in five runs on the night and Lemon drove home three. Friday's win improved Chico's second half record to 8-15 and overall mark to 33-28...the Roadrunners dropped to 7-16 in the second half and 14-46 for the year. Game two of the series is set for Saturday - left-hander Matt Campbell, a rookie out of Sacramento State, will make his pro debut as he gets the start for the Outlaws...St. George will counter with righty Mike Renery (0-0, 6.75 ERA). Game time is 7:05pm...Rory Miller, "The Voice" of the Outlaws, will call all the action beginning at approximately 7:00pm (the pre-game show will be shortened due to the "Remember the Heat Night" on-field ceremonies) on the internet and on SportsFan 101.7 ESPN Radio.
