Flyers Roll Over Scorpions

August 11, 2007 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Orange County Flyers News Release

Flyers got off to a slow start, but once they got going, they rolled their way to a 11-5 victory over the Yuma Scorpions

Perhaps still starry-eyed from the appearance of Desperate Housewives' star Teri Hatcher (who threw out the first pitch), starting pitcher Reed Dickert (5-3) and the Flyers got down early, but went on to score 7 runs in the final 2 innings and comeback to score a 11-5 victory over the Yuma Scorpions at Goodwin Field in Fullerton.

Flyers starter Dickert and the Flyers gave up 3 first inning runs as Scorpion CF Mike Goss led-off the game with a double into the left field corner and then LF Rich Janeway brought him home with a RBI double off the right field wall to score Goss and get the Scorpions on the board right off the bat.

The Scorpions got 2 more runs in the inning off a RBI triple by 1B A.J. Valentine and a Maikel Jova RBI fielder's choice to go up 3-0 on the Flyers.

The Flyers responded with a run of their own in their half of the 1st inning when DH Peanut Williams beat-out an attempted double play throw for a RBI fielder's choice and get the score to 3-1 in favor of the Scorpions.

The Scorpions scored 2 more runs in the 4th inning to get up 5-1, but the Flyers used a 3B Brett Thomas solo home run in the 4th inning and a SS Bret Levier 2-run home run in the 5th inning to close the lead to 5-4 Scorpions.

Scorpions starter Jorge Perez (4-8) was replaced by Matt Saucedo (1-3) in the 7th inning and the Flyers again jumped all over Scorpion relief pitching by scoring 4 runs in the 7th and 3 runs in the 8th.

With the bases loaded and 1-out in the 7th inning, Flyers 1B Scott Goodman slapped a RBI single to left that scored Levier and tied the game up at 5-5. C Buddy Morales followed with another RBI single that scored 2 runs and gave the Flyers the lead 7-5.

The Flyers went on to score 3 more runs in the 8th and their late inning rally was capped off by a Morales 2-run RBI double to get the Flyers lead to 11-5.

Reliever Andrew Soto (3-2) got the win for the Flyers, as he and fellow reliever Trevor Caughey (0-0) combined to shut down the Scorpions for the final 3 innings of the game and preserve the Flyers lead.

Morales went 2-5 with 3 RBI and 3B Brett Thomas nearly hit for the cycle needing only a triple as he went 4-5 with 2 RBI, a run scored, and added his 1st home run of the season for the Flyers.

The Flyers won their 3rd game in a row and go for the sweep of the Yuma Scorpions tomorrow at 2:05 at Goodwin Field.
