Chico Outlaws News Release
LONG BEACH, CA - The Chico Outlaws road struggles continued Tuesday night in Long Beach, as the host Armada took advantage of a pair of costly errors to build an early lead and then withstood a 9th inning Chico rally to down the Outlaws 7-5 in the second of a four-game series at Blair Field.
Chico actually went up 1-0 in the top of the 1st inning as Dan Luyben walked to open the game, stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored on a Tony Torcato sacrifice fly. Long Beach went ahead in the bottom of the 2nd - Ryan Lehr led off the inning with a walk, then made it safely to second when Luyben dropped a throw from Jesse Kovacs on the front end of what should have been a double play ground...the error allowed Brett Flowers to get aboard. A sac bunt moved the runners to second and third; Lehr then scored on a David Ramirez groundout and Michael Glomb followed with a base hit up the middle to plate Flowers and put the Armada on top 2-1. Long Beach added three more runs in the 4th - after two singles and an error by Kovacs loaded the bases, Lehr came home from third on a passed ball...Ramirez then singled home Flowers...and with Glomb at the plate, the Armada pulled a double steal with Dan Trumble scoring from third to make it a 5-1 game.
The Outlaws cut Long Beach's lead in half with two unearned runs in the 6th - a two-out double by Bryan Silverman was followed by a pair of Armada errors, with Silverman scoring and Kovacs advancing into scoring position...Matt Ceriani then delivered a single to left to plate Kovacs and make the score 5-3. The Armada regained their four-run advantage in the 7th when Ryan Brown doubled off of Outlaws reliever Jason Roach, knocking in Ramirez and Glomb to make the score 7-3. It stayed that way until the 9th when the Outlaws closed the gap with two-out RBI singles by Silverman and Julian Benavidez...but with the tying runs on base, Armada reliever Wayne Foltin came in to strike out Kovacs to end the game and hand Chico its second straight loss in Long Beach and fifth in a row overall.
Armada starter Andrew Layfield (1-4) allowed just one earned runs in seven innings to earn the victory, with Foltin picking up his fourth save of the season...Berek Fasking (2-4) gave up five runs - but only one earned - in a six-inning stint but was tagged with the loss. Both teams have eight hits on the night - Silverman went 3-for-5 to lead Chico while Lehr, Ramirez and Glomb had two each for Long Beach, who with the win improved to 18-15 in the second half and 40-37 on the year...the Outlaws dropped to 13-21 in the second half and 28-48 overall. Game three of the series is set for Wednesday, with Chico sending right-hander Eric Sheridan (3-2 with the Outlaws, 4-4 overall) to the mound to face righty Rik Currier (6-5). Game time is 7:05pm... hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
