James Garcia of Yuma and INF Jermy Acey of Ornage County Named GBL Players of the Week

(Dublin, CA. August 19, 2008) The Golden Baseball League (GBL) announced today that RHP James Garcia of the Yuma Scorpions has been named Safeway Pitcher of the Week while INF Jermy Acey of the Orange County Flyers has been named Safeway Player of the Week for their performances during the twelth week of the 2008 Golden Baseball League season, ending August 17th.

Garcia, 28, 6-2, 210 lbs is a right-handed pitcher who began his professional career when he was signed by the San Francisco Giants as a non-drafted free agent out of the University of California in 2002. He spent five years in the Giants organization, rising to AAA where he was used as both a starter and reliever. Released after the 2006 season he spent 2007 in the Atlantic League and Northern League before joining the Yuma Scorpions this year. Used primarily as a reliever, he moved into the closer role part way through the season and has excelled. During the last week he appeared in three games, earned Saves in all three, gave up no runs for an E.R.A of 0.00 as Yuma moved into first place in the South Division.

Acey 27, 5-11, 195, was originally signed by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 23rd round of the 2003 draft. He played three years in their farm system, reaching Single-A before being released at the end of the 2005 season. He played the last two years in the United and Can-Am independent leagues, becoming one of the leading hitters in both. He was acquired in a trade by the Orange County Flyers in the off-season and has been the regular shortstop or second baseman for the Flyers all season. Voted to the GBL All-Star team he has been one of the leading hitters in the GBL this year. Last week he led the league in batting average as he posted a mark of .500, in hits with 12, in RBIs with 11, and was second in home runs with 3 as his first half champion Flyers surged towards the top of the second half standings as well.
