Fleet hold off Chico

Long Beach Armada News Release


The Armada continue their winning streak against the defending champion Chico Outlaws at Blair Field. The answered Chico in the second pulling ahead 2-1 and would look back. Chico came on strong in the ninth, but fell short to Long Beach losing by a final of 7-5.

Armada starter Andrew Layfield (1-4) won his first game pitching a great game. He went 7 innings giving up 3 runs, 1 earned on 5 hits, walking 3 and striking out 4. Justin Segal came on in relief for Layfield going 1 2/3 innings giving up 2 runs on 3 hits, walking 2 and striking out 3. Wayne Foltin got his fourth save striking out the last batter in the ninth with two runners left on for Chico.

The Armada scoring started in the second when C David Ramirez drove in 3B Ryan Lehr on a ground out to short. 2B Michael Glomb would drive in DH Brett Flowers giving the Armada a 2-1 lead. Lehr and Flowers would score again in the fourth on errors by Chico. Ramirez drove in another run that same inning giving him a 2 for 3 day with 2 RBI and a run scored. Lehr finished 2 for 2 with 2 runs scored. Flowers 1 for 4 with 2 runs scored. Glomb 2 for 4 with a RBI and a run scored. The biggest hit came in the seventh when 1B Ryan Brown doubled in Ramirez and Glomb to give Long Beach a 7-3 lead. That would be huge because Chico would make it close late in the game.

Chico struck first with a sac fly RBI by former Armada player 1B Tony Torcato driving in 2B Dan Luyben. RF Bryan Silverman scored on an error and C Matt Ceriani drove in 3B Jesse Kovacs in the sixth. Chico down by four going into the ninth, two outs and two on, DH Julian Benavidez drove in Luyben and Silverman followed driving in Torcato. Foltin would retire Kovacs to end the game with Kovacs representing the go ahead run.

Chico starter Berek Fasking (2-4) pitched 6 innings giving up 5 runs, 1 earned on 5 hits, walking 3 and striking out 3. Jason Roach and Kevin Altman combined to go 2 innings giving up 2 runs on 3 hits, walking 2 and striking out 1.

Probable starters tomorrow for Chico Eric Sheridan (3-2) and for Long Beach Rik Currier (6-5). Game time is at 7:05pm.
