Chico Outlaws News Release

CHICO, CA - Three big St. George errors led to five unearned Chico runs, and left-hander Matt Campbell turned in a solid performance in his professional debut as the Outlaws downed the Roadrunners 9-3 in front of over 3,500 Saturday night at Nettleton Stadium. The win was Chico's third in a row after dropping five straight.

Chico's first professional baseball team, the Heat, was honored throughout the evening, with the Outlaws wearing throwback Heat jerseys, and they seemed to fit the team well as they pounded out 13 hits...but it was actually St. George that got on the board in the 2nd when Gary Nowlin doubled and came home three batters later on a sacrifice fly by Greg Lemon. Chico tied the game in the 4th when Eric Pringle walked, stole second and scored on a Steve Boggs single. Then came the fateful 5th - with two on and two out, Nolan misplayed a Jason Matteucci grounder, allowing Daniel Nava and Jason Van Meetren to score...Pringle then lined a single to right to knock in Todd Gossage; Matteucci eventually came home as well as Chico went up 5-1.

Nowlin's solo homer to right cut the Outlaws lead to three runs, but Chico responded with two runs in the bottom of the 6th (RBI singles by Van Meetren and Nava) to make the score 7-2. Ryan Stevenson bombed his second solo homer in as many days to pull St. George to within four, but the Outlaws used a two-out error by Nowlin to score a run in the bottom of the 7th and added another in the 8th on a Dragicevich triple and a single by Gossage to pull away 9-3. Campbell and relievers Paul Wilson and Jesse Oster combined to shut out the Roadrunners the rest of the way to give the Outlaws their ninth win over St. George in 15 tries this season.

Campbell (1-0) went six-and-two-thirds inning and struck out a half-dozen to earn the win in his pro debut...Mike Renery (0-1) took the loss for the Roadrunners. Craig Kuzmic led the Outlaws offense, going 3-for 5 with a double...Boggs added a pair of singles and an RBI as Chico improved to 9-15 in the second half and 34-28 overall...St. George is 7-17 in the second half and 14-47 for the year. The Roadrunners try to avoid the series sweep tomorrow as they send right-hander Jose Correa (1-1, 6.06 ERA) to the mound to face Outlaws righty John Jefferson (4-2, 4.25 ERA). Game time is scheduled for 6:05pm... hear all the action with "The Voice" of the Outlaws, Rory Miller, beginning at 5:35pm on the internet or on SportsFan 101.7 FM ESPN Radio.
