Flyers come back on Scorpions again

FULLERTON, Calif. - Scoring 10 unanswered runs to end Saturday night?s game, the Orange County Flyers defeated the Yuma Scorpions 11-5 in front of 2,145 fans at Goodwin Field.

The Scorpions (37-25, 16-8) jumped out to a 5-1 lead by the fourth inning, but the Flyers came storming back late, to take the second straight game from the visitors.

Yuma led 3-0 after the first inning as Mike Goss, Rich Janeway and A.J. Valentine scored runs in the frame. Goss and Janeway each doubled and Valentine roped a triple off the right-field wall.

In the fourth inning, the Scorpions? lead improved to four as Yosvany Almario and newcomer Jose Rodriguez scored after Pete Farina was plunked and Goss? infield single.

Goss led Yuma with a 3-for-5 evening, including a run and an RBI.

The Scorpions were shut out from that point.

Orange County third baseman Brett Thomas slugged a home run in the fourth inning and then Brett Levier hit a two-run shot over the left-field wall, trimming the lead to 5-4.

Yuma starter Jorge Perez pitched six innings, allowing eight hits and four runs in his debut for the team.

With reliever Matt Saucedo in the game, the Orange County offense got hot, scoring four runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth off the right hander.

In the seventh, the Flyers had seven consecutive batters reach base, highlighted by singles from Scott Goodman and Buddy Morales that took the lead for good.

Left fielder Rich Pohle went 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI while Thomas was 4 for 5 with a home run, two RBIs and a run.

Orange County reliever Andrew Soto earned the win, giving up one hit in two innings.

Saucedo was credited with the loss, allowing eight hits, seven runs and walking three in two innings.

It was the fifth time the Scorpions blew a three-run lead in a road game against Orange County this season.

The loss dropped Yuma three games back of first place Long Beach (42-20, 19-5) after the Armada beat the Reno Silver Sox 10-4 Saturday night.

The Scorpions and Flyers wrap up their three-game series this afternoon, with the first pitch from Goodwin Field scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
