Chico Outlaws News Release

LONG BEACH, CA - The Chico Outlaws had no problem getting runners on base, but pushing them across the plate was another story - despite giving up 10 hits and five walks, Long Beach Armada starter Ryan Claypool and three relievers combined to hand the Outlaws a 5-0 defeat in the opener of a four-game series at Blair Field in Long Beach.

Long Beach took a quick lead with two 1st inning runs against Chico starting pitcher Jake McKinley - Johnny Kaplan singled and stole second, then following a walk to Chris Klemm, the Armada pulled a double steal...Dan Trumble's infield single plated Kaplan, and Klemm came home on Chris Wakeland's fielder's choice grounder. The Outlaws put runners at second and third with one out in the 2nd but couldn't score...Long Beach went up 3-0 in the 3rd when Trumble scored from second on a Jesse Kovacs throwing error.

Chico loaded the bases against Claypool in the 4th, but again came away empty...then in the 6th Chico had runners at the corners but again came away empty. The Armada went up 5-0 in the 8th - Klemm opened the inning with a single, went to third on a Trumble double and scored when the McKinley sailed the first pitch of an intentional walk to the backstop...Trumble came home on a Wakeland sacrifice. Chico loaded the bases with nobody out in the 9th, but as had been the case all night, they couldn't score as Long Beach closer Dane de la Rosa struck out Steve Boggs, got Kovacs to foul out and induced a fielder's choice grounder off the bat of Scott Dragicevich to end the game and give the Armada their seventh straight win.

Claypool (5-2) went six innings to earn the victory, with McKinley (2-3) taking the loss. The Outlaws actually outhit the Armada 10-9 - Eric Pringle went 3-for-4 with Kovacs adding a pair of singles...Trumble had three of Long Beach's nine hits on the night. Monday's win, combined with Yuma's 5-2 loss to St. George, moved the Armada (10-2 second half, 33-17 overall) into sole possession of first place in the Golden Baseball League's second half standings...the Outlaws dropped to 4-8 in the second half and 29-21 for the year. Game two of the series is set for Tuesday, with right-hander Jake McLintock (2-1) on the mound for Chico; Long Beach will start righty Andrew Layfield (0-1). Game time is 7:05pm...hear all the action with "The Voice" of the Outlaws, Rory Miller, beginning at 6:35pm on the internet or on SportsFan 101.7 FM ESPN Radio.
