Outlaws blank Armada 4-0 in series opener

LONG BEACH, CA - Nick Singleton nearly duplicated last week's complete game shutout of Long Beach Tuesday afternoon, combining with two Chico relievers to hold the Armada to just three hits en route to a 4-0 victory in the opener of a three-game series at Blair Field in Long Beach. The win was the Outlaws franchise record tying seventh in a row and 12th in the team's last 14 games.
The game was dominated early by the two starting pitchers - while Singleton set down the first nine Armada batters he faced, Long Beach right-hander and Golden Baseball League strikeout leader Andre Simpson fanned seven Outlaws over the first three frames. Chico got on the board in the top of the 4th inning when Mike Mallory walked, went to third on a hit-and-run single by Craig Kuzmic and scored on Jason Van Meetren's line single to center. The Armada put runners at second and third with two outs in the bottom of the 4th but came away empty as Singleton struck out Jose Canseco to end the inning. That would be the only real scoring threat Long Beach could muster the whole day...the Armada had only one runner get as far as second base the remainder of the contest.
The Outlaws went up 2-0 in the top of the 7th when Bobby Gandolfo singled with two outs and scored on Desi Wilson's triple into the right field corner. Singleton finally tired in the 8th, and with one out and the potential tying run at the plate, Chico manager Mark Parent went to his bullpen and summoned left-hander Trevor Caughey, who retired the next two hitters to end the threat. The Outlaws plated a pair of insurance runs off reliever Dennis LeDuc in the 9th - Gandolfo knocked in Jesse Kovacs with an infield single and Jason Matteucci scored on a Wilson sacrifice fly to put Chico up 4-0. Right-hander George Huguet came on in the bottom of the 9th to set down Long Bach down in order to wrap up the series-opening victory.
Singleton (7-5) struck out seven in seven-and-a-third innings (he has now tossed 16-and-a-third consecutive scoreless innings) to earn the victory and become the GBL's first seven game winner...Simpson (5-3) suffered the loss. Gandolfo, Matteucci and Van Meetren each had two hits to lead the Outlaws offense, which finished with eight safeties on the day. The win upped Chico's second half record to 12-3 and overall mark to 34-21; Long Beach dropped to 6-9 in the second half and 28-27 on the season. Game two of the series is set for Wednesday night, with right-hander Phil Springman (5-0) on the mound for the Outlaws...the Armada are expected to counter with righty Ryan Claypool (3-2). Game time is 7:05pm.
