Chico Outlaws News Release
RENO, NV - The Chico Outlaws proved Thursday they aren't about to rest on their first half laurels - already with a playoff berth in hand, the Outlaws opened up the sseason's second half by piling up double digits in both runs and hits en route to a 12-6 thumping of the Reno Silver Sox at Peccole Park on the University of Nevada, Reno campus.
Right-hander John Jefferson made his first-ever professional start and pitched well, allowing just three runs in six innings of work. The Outlaws provided plenty of run support, and it began in the 1st inning when Jesse Kovacs scored on an error by Reno first baseman Ryan Brown...Scott Dragicevich then came home on a Jake Ferris sacrifice fly to give Chico a quick 2-0 lead. The Silver Sox tied it up in the bottom of the 1st on Jose Rodriguez' eighth homer of the year with a man aboard. The Outlaws went back on top in the 2nd when Kovacs singled home Eric Pringle, but in the bottom of the 3rd Reno knotted up the score at three apiece on a two-out RBI single by Juan Senreiso.
Chico went ahead to stay in the 5th when, with Jason Van Meetren aboard, Ferris ripped a long home run over the left field wall (his fourth of the year and second of the series). The Outlaws went up 7-3 with two more runs in the 6th, this time off reliever Josh Evans - Van Meetren's sacrifice fly plated Pringle and Ferris knocked in Steve Boggs with a single up the middle. Brock Ungrict led off the 7th inning with a double off the top of the 20-foot-high center field wall and promptly scored when Pringle shot a base hit through the left side of the infield, extending Chico's advantage to 8-3. Ryan Kowalski's RBI single off Outlaws reliever Jesse Oster in the bottom of the 7th cut the Reno deficit to four, but that would be as close as the Silver Sox would come, as Chico scored twice in the 8th (RBI singles by Ferris and Ungricht) and twice in the 9th (Van Meetren doubling home Boggs and Dragicevich) to go up 12-4. A pair of Dragicevich throwing errors set the table for two unearned Reno runs in the bottom of the 9th, but Oster induced a game-ending double play grounder off the bat of Senreiso to seal the Outlaws second straight victory over the Silver Sox (the first time Chico has ever won back-to-back games in Reno) and their fourth win in the last five games.
Jefferson (3-0) struck out a season-high six batters in earning the win...Reno starter Jason Martinez (2-4) lasted just five innings in taking the loss. Ferris finished the night with three hits and a career-high five RBI...Pringle was a perfect 4-for-4 on the night, reaching base five times...Van Meetren collected three hits and knocked in three...and Kovacs and Ungricht each chipped in with two hits and an RBI. The Silver Sox were held to just seven hits, with Kowalski and Victor Hall both picking up a pair of hits. Thursday's win gives Chico a 1-0 second half record and a 26-13 overall mark...Reno dropped to 18-20 on the year and 0-1 in second half play. The finale of the four-game series is slated for Friday, with the Outlaws sending right-hander Jake McKinley (2-2) to the mound; the Silver Sox will counter with righty Nick Moran (2-1). Game time is 7:00pm...hear all the action with "The Voice" of the Outlaws, Rory Miller, beginning at 6:35pm on the internet or on SportsFan 101.7 FM ESPN Radio.
