Chico Outlaws News Release
CHICO, CA - The Orange County Flyers built an early lead, withstood a 6th inning Chico rally and then put the game away with a five run 7th to beat the Outlaws 10-4 Monday night in the opener of a three-game series at Nettleton Stadium.
Chico left-hadner Jason Roach and Orange County righty Andre Simpson traded zeroes for the first three innings of the contest...then the Flyers broke through in the 4th when Dave Bacani scored on a bases-loaded groundout off the bat of Pat Breen. Orange County went up 3-0 in the 5th when Fernando Pacheco led off the inning with a walk and was doubled home by Sean Lorentz...Lorentz would later score on a Bacani sacrifice fly. Two Chico miscues helped the Flyers extend their lead to 5-0 in the 6th - Roach's throwing error allowed Brian Rios to reach...he then came home on a Pat Breen double; Breen scoring when Outlaws second baseman Kevin McCarthy booted a ground ball off the bat of Jeff LaRue. Simpson, meanwhile, kept the Chico offense in check, retiring 13 in a row at one point.
In the bottom of the 6th the Outlaws finally broke through - Jesse Kovacs and Todd Gossage delivered a pair of two-out singles, setting the stage for Julian Benavidez, who crushed a three-run homer over the left field wall. Lino Garcia followed suit with a solo blast to center - the back-to-back homers made the score 5-4. But the Flyers answered right back in the 7th, sending 10 men to the plate to push their lead to six - Jermy Acey belted a two-run homer off Outlaws reliever Derrick Landavazo...Breen knocked in a run with a triple...and LaRue added an RBI double. With the score now 10-4, the Orange County bullpen shut Chico down the rest of the way - Michael Rocco and Eric Sheridan combined to allow just one Outlaws hit over three shutout innings to give the Flyers the series-opening victory.
Simpson (3-0) struck out six over six innings of work to earn the win, with Roach (0-2) taking the loss. Breen led the Orange County offense with two hits and three RBI, while LaRue going 2-for-4 on the night...Chico had just seven hits, with no starter delivering more than one. Monday's loss dropped the Outlaws to 1-7 on the season, while the Flyers improved to 5-3. Game two of the series is set for Tuesday, with right-hander Berek Fasking (0-0) getting the start for Chico...Orange County counters with lefty Matt Merricks (0-0). Game time is 7:05pm...hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play beginning at 6:40pm on ESPN 101.7 FM or AM 1340.
