Chico Outlaws News Release
LONG BEACH, CA - It only happened in one inning - but for the first time in nearly a week the Outlaws bunched some hits together, scoring three runs in the 3rd...and that was more than enough offense for left-hander Derrick Loop, who notched his Golden Baseball League-leading seventh win of the season as Chico downed the Long Beach Armada 4-1 Thursday afternoon at Blair Field in Long Beach. The win helped the Outlaws salvage the finale of their four-game series with the Armada and snapped Chico's three-game losing streak.
The Armada actually took the early lead in the 1st when Johnny Kaplan led off the inning with a double, stole third and scored when catcher Jason Alcott's throw sailed into left field. That would be all Long Beach would be able to muster for the rest of the afternoon...after giving up three hits in the opening frame, Loop allowed just two Armada hits the rest of the way. Chico took the lead to stay in the 3rd against Long Beach starter Justin Ramsey - Eric Pringle walked to start the inning, then went to second on Steve Boggs' single up the middle. Ramsey then tried to pick off Pringle at second, but the throw went into center field...the error putting runners at second and third. Two batters later Scott Dragicevich lined a single to center...his first hit of the series plated Pringle to tie the score. Daniel Nava followed with a line single to center to knock in Boggs...and Jake Ferris wrapped up the rally with a two-out single to left to drive home Dragicevich to put the Outlaws up 3-1.
Chico extended their lead in the 6th without the benefit of a hit - with one out, Ferris reached when Armada shortstop Daisuke Ikenaga booted his grounder. After Ferris stole second, Jorge Araiza misplayed Alcott's grounder to second...Ferris scoring on the play to make it 4-1. Loop cruised into the 9th, struck out Chris Klemm to start the inning, then handed the ball to Outlaws closer Todd Gelatka, who recorded the final two outs to lock down the victory.
In his longest outing of the year, Loop (7-3) struck out three in eight-and-a-third innings to earn the victory, with Gelatka picking up his GBL-leading 15th save of the season...Ramsey (3-3) lasted just three innings in taking the loss. Nava had two of the Outlaws five hits on the afternoon...Long Beach also had five hits, with Kaplan going 3-for-4. Thursday's win improved the Outlaws second half record to 5-10 and 30-23 overall...the Armada fell to 12-3 in the second half and 35-18 for the year. Chico continues its eight-game road trip Friday with the first of four against the St. George Roadrunners...newly-acquired right-hander Daniel "Duck" Howard (2-1 for the Anderson Joes of the independent South Coast League) makes his first start for the Outlaws, while righty Jose Correa (0-1) is expected to be on the mound for the Roadrunners. Game time is 6:05pm Pacific time...hear all the action with "The Voice" of the Outlaws, Rory Miller, beginning at 5:35pm on the internet or on SportsFan 101.7 FM ESPN Radio.
